Deaf College Africa came alive with colour, music, and celebration as Form 4 students marked a milestone at their much-anticipated leavers’ party.

The event was a joyful fusion of pride and reflection, honouring the achievements of learners who have defied odds to excel both socially and academically. School patrons Mr. and Mrs. Charuma, who graced the occasion as Guests of Honour, delivered an inspiring message urging students to uphold discipline, avoid drugs and substance abuse, and remember that Deafness does not limit potential — success, they emphasized, is born of commitment and determination.

Deaf Zimbabwe Trust Executive Director, Ms. B. Nyangairi, joined in celebrating the learners’ resilience, while College Head, Mrs. Rosemary Nyangairi, and her dedicated staff commended the class for being exemplary ambassadors of the school’s vision of academic excellence and professional achievement.

Deaf Champion and Social Worker, Dumisani Nkomo, further encouraged the students to remain focused on education as the gateway to empowerment. Speaking on behalf of his peers, Kelvin Kupeta expressed heartfelt gratitude to the teachers for their guidance, mentorship, and unwavering support.

The event ended in high spirits, punctuated by song, dance, and a sumptuous feast — the much-talked-about “Sapatina Sapatina” meal, symbolizing abundance and celebration befitting the occasion.

Deaf College Africa students celebrated the International Week of the Deaf with an educational tour to Mwanga Lodge, exploring wildlife and ecosystems. This experience highlighted the importance of inclusive education and accessible opportunities for Deaf individuals. The 2025 theme, "No Human Rights Without Sign Language Rights," emphasizes that sign language is a fundamental human right essential for ensuring equity, accessibility, and dignity.

The students' enthusiasm was palpable as they learned about the natural world, often facing barriers due to lack of sign language interpretation. This experience underscores the need for accessible education, sign language rights, and accessible tourism. Ensuring that tourism destinations and services are accessible to all, including Deaf individuals, is crucial. This can be achieved by providing sign language interpretation, designing accessible infrastructure, and involving Deaf individuals in tourism planning.

By promoting accessible tourism and inclusive education, we can empower Deaf individuals to thrive and contribute to their fullest potential. Let's work towards creating a more inclusive and accessible world for all.

Happy International Week of the Deaf!

It's Deaf Awareness Month and our learners are not being left behind. Today's theme is "Deaf Rights in Crises". Deaf communities must be at the forefront of disaster planning through leadership and collaboration. By utilising national sign languages and deaf-centred strategies, crisis response can be significantly strengthened. It is crucial that states and organizations ensure deaf people have access to information in sign language during emergencies, upholding their rights and safety 🚨.

Celebrating Excellence and Inclusion: Deaf College Africa and Victory Academy Joint Prize Giving Day

In a remarkable show of inclusion, Deaf College Africa and Victory Academy — two schools sharing the same campus, one for Deaf learners and the other for hearing learners — recently came together to celebrate their joint Prize Giving Day. The event honoured students who excelled in academics and sports, showing that excellence knows no barriers when learners are supported and encouraged to thrive side by side.

The founding visionary, Mr. Lyndon Nkomo, who was Guest of Honour, reminded everyone of the power of community in nurturing success. He called on parents to support Deaf learners wholeheartedly and to help create pathways for them to succeed in life just like their hearing peers.

Deaf Champions Prince Gogwe and Dumisani Nkomo motivated fellow learners to stay focused and work hard, underscoring that education opens doors to a brighter future for all — Deaf and hearing alike.

Parents were also urged to ensure that Deaf learners are not left behind when it comes to opportunities for tertiary education. Inclusion means ensuring that every learner, regardless of hearing status, has the chance to reach their fullest potential.

This Prize Giving Day is more than an awards ceremony — it is a celebration of true inclusion and a commitment to building a society where Deaf and hearing learners grow, learn and succeed together.

Congratulations to all the outstanding students — you are living proof that when we break barriers, we build a future where everyone shines!

Award-winning journalist and photographer Geoffrey Buta from Ghana donated a camera and flash to Deaf College Africa on March 10, 2025. The donation was part of a program that aimed to inspire and educate students about photography and its impact on storytelling.

The camera will enable students who are Deaf to explore their creativity and capture their stories, ultimately creating livelihoods for Deaf learners through photography. The event also featured a photography workshop, where Buta shared his expertise and encouraged students to use photography as a tool for advocacy and change.

The photography workshop was a huge success, with students eagerly learning from Buta's wealth of experience. They were taught various basic photography techniques, including composition, lighting, and capturing moments. Buta also emphasised the importance of using photography as a means of self-expression and advocacy, encouraging students to tell their own stories and share their perspectives with the world.

With their newfound skills and confidence, the students of Deaf College Africa are now equipped to make their voices heard through the powerful medium of photography.
