Teacher Professional Development (TPD): Zimbabwe πΏπΌ vs New Zealand π³πΏ
As a teacher who has experienced professional development in both Zimbabwe and New Zealand, Iβve had the opportunity to reflect on how Teacher Professional Development (TPD) is approached in different contexts.
In Zimbabwe and many parts of Africa, TPD is often:
β’ Strongly theory-based, with a solid grounding in educational foundations
β’ Delivered through workshops, cluster meetings, and college-based training
β’ Highly resource-constrained, requiring teachers to be innovative and resilient
β’ Driven largely by personal commitment, passion, and self-initiative
Teachers often grow through experience, mentorship, and adaptability, even when formal structures and resources are limited.
In New Zealand, TPD tends to be:
β’ Ongoing, structured, and well-documented
β’ Closely aligned to teaching standards, appraisal, and registration
β’ Supported by school leadership, government frameworks, and professional learning communities
β’ Strongly focused on reflective practice, evidence, inclusion, and learner wellbeing
What stands out most is that neither system is βbetterβ β they are different.
Africa produces teachers who are resourceful, adaptable, and resilient.
New Zealand nurtures teachers who are reflective, well-supported, and continuously developed.
I believe the future of teacher development lies in learning from both worlds:
β’ Combining strong theory and resilience with structured support and reflective practice
β’ Valuing teacher voice, lived experience, and cultural context
β’ Seeing TPD not as an event, but as a lifelong professional journey
As educators, when we share experiences across borders, we all grow ππ
