THE TO***CO GROWER’S LEDGER | Friday Briefing
Volume #1: Input Contracts, Field Preparation and Grower Rights
Theme: Farming is a business - Balance your books and your harvest.
Farming without tracking your cost of production destroys your profits. As September draws to a close field operations are at peak with irrigated transplanting underway and dryland land preparations reaching critical deadlines. With global buyers prioritizing leaf quality over volume keep these three fundamentals in check:
1. CONTRACT & INPUT AUDIT: Verify Before You Sign
• Check your inputs against your contract before signing delivery vouchers.
• Reject incomplete seed packs ,it is illegal under regulatory frameworks for contractors to under-supply growers.
• Never accept verbal promises that “the invoice will be corrected later.” An uncorrected delivery voucher turns into permanent stop-order debt at the auction floors.
2. EXPERT LINKAGE: Rely on Accredited Institutions ,Not Speculation
• Every farm has unique soil chemistry and micro-climates. Avoid costly unverified advice from social media.
• Consult your local Agritex extension officer or the To***co Research Board (TRB / Kutsaga) for soil testing, nursery diagnostics and correct basal placement to avoid fertilizer burn.
3. STATUTORY COMPLIANCE & GROWER PROTECTION
• Renew your grower number now while the fee is still $10 to avoid late registration penalties and marketing delays.
• If you do not understand your contract terms do not sign blindly. Contact ZiToGA so we can review the terms and ensure your crop is not tied down with inadequate input packages.
