๐Ÿšจ BREAKING NEWS | CHAMPIONS OF THE GREEN GLOBAL (GLGI) INTERNATIONAL CLIMATE JUSTICE MOOT COURT COMPETITION 2026 ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ผ

The University of Zimbabwe has been crowned Champion of the 2026 Green Law Global Institute (GLGI) International Moot Court Competition, securing a unanimous 5โ€“0 decision from the final bench.

Representing the University of Zimbabweโ€™s (Coalition for Ethical Circular Apparel) CECA Team, Lauren Mkahanana and Kudakwashe Masango emerged victorious after months of demanding legal research, memorial drafting and oral advocacy in one of the continentโ€™s climate justice competitions.

The road to the championship
The journey began in March/April 2026, when 12 universities entered the competition to argue a complex dispute on climate justice and environmental governance.

Over several months, teams progressed through:
Preliminary Rounds
Quarter-Finals
Semi-Finals
The Grand Final
The elimination rounds ultimately produced two finalists: the University of Zimbabwe๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ผ and a Catholic University of Kenya๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช, setting the stage for the championship round.

Two weeks before the announcement of the results, on 24 August 2026, the two teams met in the decisive final. Following deliberations, the five-member bench, including Justice Helen Omondi, unanimously ruled in favour of the University of Zimbabwe, officially crowning UZ the 2026 GLGI International Moot Court Champions.

More than a trophy. This victory reflects months of discipline, resilience and belief in the power of advocacy. Every memorial drafted, every late night preparation session and every round argued became part of a journey that ended with Zimbabwe standing on top of an international stage.

We hope this achievement encourages every law student to step into mooting. The courtroom is more than a competition. It is where confidence is built, legal reasoning is sharpened and future advocates discover what they are capable of becoming.
UZ for the win. Dare to Moot.

The University of Zimbabwe Moot Society was honoured to be featured on the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporationโ€™s Young, Gifted and Talented Programme, a national platform dedicated to highlighting young Zimbabweans who are making a meaningful impact in their respective fields.

We were proudly represented by exceptional mooters Natasha Dhiwayo, Miriam Moyo ,Rudo Marere and Tanaka Gota, who shared insights into the transformative role mooting has played in their personal and professional development.

During the interview, Natasha and Miriam reflected on their mooting journeys, which have afforded them opportunities to compete at national, regional, and international levels, representing Zimbabwe in countries such as Switzerland and Austria. They spoke about how mooting has opened doors, built confidence, and provided experiences that extend far beyond the classroom.

Natasha highlighted how mooting has helped her build a global network and personal brand, creating opportunities for growth, leadership, and international engagement. Miriam emphasized the practical skills mooting develops time management, multitasking, teamwork, critical thinking, and the ability to perform under pressure all of which are essential for success in legal practice.

As a Society, we remain grateful to the coaches, advocates, judges, and mentors who continuously invest their time and expertise into developing the next generation of legal professionals. Their guidance ensures that students leave not only as better advocates, but as individuals equipped for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
