A multidisciplinary institute preserving and practicing African knowledge through art, community, and research. Home-Coming | Kumusha | Ekhaya

Knowing was never meant to be gatekept.

In many African communities, knowledge lived in conversation,.in story, in music, ritual and community. It moved from one person to another, from one generation to the next.

To know was also to share.

What happens when we begin returning to that way of thinking?

As we continue building towards Home-Coming: Kumusha | Ekhaya, we remain committed to creating spaces where creativity, culture and knowledge can be experienced collectively.

Kumusha, Ekhaya, Home - Coming
Three words, One return
To the land, To the stories
To ourselves, To each other

This is what we stand for, this is what we're building

In this week's dialogue, we tackle what it means to belong, to have a place we call home. Can home be a single place of fortress, can it be people, could it be a community or simply a bond shared through different experiences?

Let dive deeper

African knowledge was never lost.
It was interrupted."

For generations, our ways of knowing โ€” through story, music, ritual, language, and community โ€” were pushed to the margins.

But they did not disappear.

They lived in our homes.
In our elders.
In our art.
In the quiet spaces where memory refused to fade.

Paivepo Dzefunde exists to engage with that memory , not just to admire it, but to study it, practice it, and share it.

This is not just reflection.
It is work.

So we begin with a question:

What is one African practice, tradition, or way of knowing you grew up with that you believe should be preserved, studied, or taught?

We are listening.
We are learning.
We are building.

Today is not just a birthday.
It is a return.

After loss, we paused. We reflected. We held space for what we lost โ€” a mother, a mentor, a guiding force within this vision.

Today, we rise again. Gently, but with purpose.

Paivepo Dzefunde returns โ€” carried by legacy, rooted in memory, and guided by something greater than us.

In honor of those who built with us, and those who continue through us!
