Africa's health sciences students must leverage bio-AI tools to enhance their biomedical research, diagnostics and improve their understanding of genomics.

Here are the 5 bio-AI tools you must know and their uses:

1. AlphaFold 3: protein structure prediction.
2. FoldX: mutation stability analysis in proteins.
3. ESMFold: rapid sequence-to-structure prediction.
4. PyMOL: molecular visualization for 3D biomolecules.
5. NVIDIA Clara: AI healthcare platform for imaging genomics and clinical support.

At Mator Design we equip African life sciences students with practical bio-AI skills to deepen their understanding of biology.

We were excited to participate in the 2026 Harvard University HSIL Hackathon, working alongside Rx Pathway and competing against over 80 participants in Zimbabwe.

With the recent launch of our AI and Life Sciences program at Mator Design, this was a great opportunity to apply our expertise in AI-driven healthcare.

Did you know that the maternal mortality rate in Zimbabwe is approximately 363 for every 100,000 live birth, according to UNFPA? This challenge pushed us to ideate, engage in rapid prototyping and validate a functional AI solution to help address this issue in Africa.

Our solution stood out, highlighting the power of combining biocomputational AI and human-centered design to solve African healthcare challenges.

We appreciate Matamba Film Labs for Women for bringing this global hackathon opportunity to Zimbabwe.

Africa’s fashion design is uniquely bold and deeply rooted in culture, telling stories through colour and heritage. Zimbabwe’s creative economy is thriving, with fashion at its forefront, shaping identity and economic opportunity.

Attending Creative Economy Week gave us an experience that reignited our vision to advance design thinking in fashion design. From colour, shape, texture to material type, companies such as Nike uses design thinking to rapidly iterate their designs to create aesthetically beautiful clothes. Designers understand how exciting this process it.

Supported by the British Council and the Swiss Embassy, this year’s Creative Economy Week has become a space where creatives test ideas, sharpen thinking and expand what feels possible, from circular fashion and environmentally conscious design to the evolving role of digital aesthetics.

If you’re into fashion design and want to use design thinking to grow your business, let’s connect.

We are proud of our students, Carl and Gary for their exceptional performance at the Genius Olympiad Zimbabwe, held at The Heritage School Zimbabwe.

Carl and Gary presented their AI project, TerraTracts, an AI-powered digital twin platform for sustainable land management and climate-resilient monitoring. Their system leverages convolutional neural networks to analyze satellite images for land zoning, 3D map generation and risk profiling.

TerraTracts demo achieves 92% accuracy in land cover classification and 88% accuracy in flood prediction. We celebrate Carl and Gary for taking the stage and demonstrating how AI can meaningfully drive climate action.

Mator Design works with schools, equipping learners with skills in AI, robotics, coding, AI in life sciences and design thinking for them to succeed in their careers.

We are thrilled to celebrate our student, Nicole Mahonah, for her exceptional performance as a finalist at the 2026 Zimbabwe Science Fair.

She developed Linest AI, an AI-powered mental health chatbot designed to provide safe, accessible and culturally relevant support to Zimbabwean teenagers.

Nicole is part of our Girls in AI program, where her exceptional performance earned her the title of Mator Design AI Champion, alongside Shayne and Tanyaradzwa.

At Mator Design, we are proud of her achievements and will continue supporting her project as she is working towards scaling it to a bigger audience.

Zimbabwe's cultural identity cannot have global influence if we don’t support local talent.

It was inspiring to attend the Creative Economy Week 2026 Grant in Arts Roundtable, hosted by the British Council Zimbabwe in Harare this month.

The roundtable was moderated by Farai Bayai Ncube, where institutions like UNESCO, Culture Fund of Zimbabwe Trust, Old Mutual Zimbabwe and Eight2Five Innovation Hub emphasized funding pathways and building sustainable, globally scalable creative businesses with measurable impact.

We strongly believe that, in the near future, AI will drive the creative economy and enable artists to monetize their talent while preserving local relevance.

Africa cannot lead in AI if half its population is left behind!

Youth in marginalized communities, especially young girls in rural areas, are not adopting AI at the same pace as their urban counterparts. Meanwhile, AI hype often focuses on non-essential applications, such as generating images, instead of developing solutions for climate-smart farming, life sciences, healthcare, education or improving the performance of SMEs.

We believe AI education must be easily accessible and inclusive. We are particularly happy for Zimbabwe having the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (2026–2030). Mator Design is well aligned with the national AI strategy, providing AI education for youth and empowering them with skills in machine learning, chatbot development, data science, large language models, and coding.
