Ending the first term with an Easter bang! Such an exciting week - from fun filled Easter art aimed at continually developing key skills in our children, Easter themed PE activities for gross motor skills and preparation for later sporting activities, a visit from the Easter bunny and an Easter egg hunt, to finally, ending off with our beautiful Easter bonnet day.

We truly had the most wonderful first term of 2026 and we are so proud of how our children settled in to the year and how much they have achieved this term!

Happy Easter to all of our Jabulani School parents and children!

Why we love using our Montessori equipment in our lessons:

Practicing phonics (the sounds of letters) and letter recognition!

The Sandpaper Letters improve cognitive memory recall through tracing movements and provide a tangible, tactile experience that helps children connect the sound of a letter to its physical shape.

Reasons to love using Montessori equipment in our lessons!

Foundational geography activities:
Through using the sandpaper globe, our children gain a tactile, sensory experience to help them distinguish land from water, as well as introducing the concept that the Earth is a spherical planet made of land and water.

Our continent globe teaches our children that the land on earth is divided into different continents and they then learn about the differences between each continent, gaining a wonderful knowledge and cultural awareness ❤️

"The act of creating for young children is about the process, not the outcome.

Children need to explore, takes risks, make their own choices. This is the richness of creativity. This is the groundwork for future problem solvers." - Meri Cherry

Learning about the life cycle of a frog!

This activity teaches the five to six key stages: eggs (spawn), tadpole, tadpole with two legs, tadpole with four legs (froglet), and adult frog.

This activity promotes sequencing, scientific observation, vocabulary development, concentration and listening skills. It also develops an interest and curiosity in the world around us.

Reasons to love using the Montessori apparatus in our lessons:

Using the golden beads to introduce the decimal system and place value (units, tens, hundreds and thousands).

This activity gives our children a strong understanding of a difficult and abstract topic which sets the foundation for all later maths ❤️

It has been a busy start to the school year!

From maths activities, pre writing lessons, cultural studies, art, Montessori activities, projects and sporting activities, our children have started 2026 with a bang!

We have so much planned for the year ahead and cannot wait to share it all with our children.

Reasons to love using the Montessori apparatus in our lessons:

The Montessori Large Moveable Alphabet - preparing our children for later reading and writing!

* Phonemic awareness: It helps children focus on the individual sounds within words (phonics) and understand the connection between sounds and their corresponding letters.

* Pre-writing skills: By using the letters, children practice word construction and develop a sense of spelling based on what they hear, which lays the groundwork for formal writing.

* Language development: The material supports a child's overall language and literacy development, including letter recognition and the ability to build words and sentences.

* Independent learning: The material allows children to work independently, using sound and logic to form words, which builds confidence and a joy for learning.

Reasons to love using Montessori apparatus in our lessons:

The Montessori Number Rods

* Understanding quantity: The rods provide a concrete, physical representation of number quantities, so a child can see and feel that the rod for 10 is much longer than the rod for 1.

* Associating number names and quantity: The children learn the name of a number with its corresponding physical quantity on the rod.

* Learning number sequence: The rods help children learn the correct order of numbers from 1 to 10.

* Basic arithmetic: They serve as a basis for later learning about more complex concepts, like combinations of 10 and other forms of maths.

* Measurement: The rods help children understand measurement

* Control of error: The number of partitions on each rod acts as a built-in control of error, so the child can identify any mistakes in their own work by simply counting the segments.

So many reasons to love teaching with Montessori equipment!

Here we are using the Montessori Colour Box Three which develops the child in the following ways:

1. Fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination

* Children learn to hold the tablets with their thumb and forefinger, which is a preparation for holding a pencil correctly.
* Placing the tablets from darkest to lightest refines their movements and builds hand-eye coordination.

2. Visual discrimination

* The activity requires the child to carefully observe and compare subtle differences in color shades, training their eyes to discriminate between them which prepares the child for later reading.
* It introduces the concept of grading and provides practice in ordering and sequencing, which strengthens visual sensitivity.

3. Concentration and patience

* Grading the colors from dark to light requires focus and patience, as it can be a long and detailed activity.
* This process helps children develop concentration and learn to work through a task with a high degree of focus.
