A HISTORIC TALE COMES ALIVE: Umkhathi Theatre Works & C.T.D. Present Icala Lezinduna
Get ready to witness a pivotal piece of Ndebele history as Umkhathi Theatre Works, in partnership with the Centre for Talent Development (C.T.D.), presents a performance-based workshop of Icala Lezinduna. This production, adapted from S.J. Nondo's renowned book, is scheduled for Friday, 29 May 2026, starting at 9:00 AM. The venue is yet to be announced.
The Plot: A Story of Power and Consequence
Icala Lezinduna is a compelling tale of succession within the Ndebele kingdom and is a Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) Advanced Level Ndebele set book. The story is a dramatic re-imagination of historical events featuring key figures such as King Mzilikazi, Chief Gundwane Ndiweni, and Nkulumane.
The narrative centres on Chief Gundwane Ndiweni, a paramount leader who was entrusted by King Mzilikazi to lead a faction of the Ndebele people to find new land, with the intention of reuniting later. As seasons passed with no word from the King, Chief Gundwane made a monumental decision: he permitted the performance of Inxwala, the sacred first fruits ceremony—a ritual that was traditionally reserved exclusively for the King. This act of overstepping his authority set off a dramatic chain of events that would forever shape Ndebele history, exploring themes of power, loyalty, and tradition.
A Rich Theatrical Experience
This performance-based workshop by Umkhathi Theatre Works and C.T.D. aims to bring this literary classic to life. True to the vision of previous adaptations, this production is expected to retain the richness of the Ndebele language, incorporating deep idioms and praise poetry. Audiences can look forward to a hybrid theatre style that blends acting with traditional music and dance, making history both accessible and entertaining.
The producer for this event is Thabani Hilary Moyo, with facilitation by Alexius Mangoro and direction by Matesu Dube. This collaboration brings together two powerful forces in the arts—Umkhathi Theatre Works, known for their dynamic and culturally grounded performances, and the Centre for Talent Development, a hub for nurturing artistic excellence.
Don't Miss It
This event is a must-see for students studying the book, history enthusiasts, and anyone interested in experiencing the power of Ndebele storytelling. For more information, contact the numbers provided on the flier or visit the website.
