The Heat wave has come and gone. Or has it??

A few tips….
1- Keep the pets inside where it’s cool. Not kennels please. Kennels become saunas in the heat.
2- Supply plenty of water & watering points.
3- Never leave them in the car.
4- Limited or no exercise on hot days.
5- Don’t rely on the fan. A cold wash of ice blocks works better.
6- Monitor humidity readings (heat stroke).
7- Have those long-haired guys trimmed.
8- Don’t overfeed.

Most importantly, watch out for signs of heat stroke.

Risk factors
Overweight, very old or very young, sickness and unfitness. Certain breeds are also more prone and these include bulldogs, boxers, pugs, Shih Tzu’s and other dogs and cats with short muzzles.

Signs
May include heavy panting, glazed eyes, rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, excessive thirst, lethargy, fever, dizziness, disorientation, vomiting, deep purple or red tongue, seizures and unconsciousness.

First aid procedures:
Move your pet into the shade or an air-conditioned area. Apply ice packs or cold towel on to the head, neck and chest or run cool (not cold) water over the pet. Let them drink small amounts of cool water frequently or lick an ice cube and rush to us for a complete assessment and treatment.

For the next couple of weeks we have the reptile lady visiting our school and showing off her beautiful African reptiles. We learn how they eat and are allowed to touch them . We are also making a book ourselves so we can remember our experience. Phone this week for details on how to register as we start swimming lessons and computers this week .
