UNESCO HANDS OVER REHABILITATED AND EXTENDED CLINIC TO NORTEC.....
Yesterday Northen Technical College (NORTEC) marked a major milestone in its commitment to student welfare with the official handover of the rehabilitated and extended College Clinic by UNESCO under the Our Rights, Our Lives, Our Future (O3PLUS) Project.
The upgraded facility which includes a youth-friendly space, consultation rooms, observation wards, counselling facilities and improved ablution services will significantly enhance access to quality healthcare for not only the students but staff members aswel.
Speaking during the ceremony, NORTEC Board Chairperson Lawrence Matibini described the clinic as a tangible symbol of the strong partnership between UNESCO and the College emphasizing that investment in student health is an investment in education, productivity, and national development.
Mr Matibini noted that the facility directly contributes to the attainment of Sustainable Development Goal 3 on good health and well-being and sustainable development goal 4 on quality education.
Mr. Matibini expressed gratitude to UNESCO for its support through the O3PLUS Project, which has transformed the College’s healthcare infrastructure from a modest five-room clinic into an expanded facility capable of providing comprehensive and youth-friendly health services.
He also reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to maintaining the clinic, ensuring equitable access to services and upholding the highest healthcare standards.
NORTEC Principal Eng Martin Kasonso described the occasion as a historic achievement and the realization of a vision conceived four years ago to create a youth-friendly corner focused on the holistic well-being of students. He noted that the O3PLUS Project has positively transformed campus culture by promoting health awareness, strengthening healthcare leadership and supporting both physical and mental health services.
Eng Kasonso further called on corporate partners, alumni and stakeholders to support the equipping of the facility with essential furniture and equipment to ensure its full operationalization and long-term sustainability.
Speaking on behalf of UNESCO, the O3PLUS project team leader Ms Alice Saili said the renovation was guided by the health needs identified among students including access to healthcare, mental health support, sexual and reproductive health services, HIV prevention and gender-based violence response.
Ms Saili emphasized that quality education cannot be separated from health and well-being and that the renovated clinic will help create a safer, healthier and more supportive learning environment.
She encouraged the College community to take ownership of the facility and ensure its continued maintenance and effective utilization beyond the life of the project.
The handover ceremony underscored the importance of partnerships among educational institutions, government, development partners, and students in advancing health and well-being within higher and tertiary education institutions.
