Literacy lesson for lower grades 1-4
*1. PHONEMIC AWARENESS(PA)*
*What is phonemic awareness(PA)?*
✓Is defined as the ability to hear sounds and manipulate them orally(MOE 2012:9).
✓PA is the knowledge that words are made up of different sounds and theses sounds can be put together to make words. (PA) can also called sound awareness(MOE 2013:16).
-----------------------------------
*Why teaching Phonemic awareness?*
1.*PA* teaches children to identify, understand, and manipulate sounds in spoken words.
2. Teaching *PA* helps teachers recognise if learners will have trouble with reading and spelling.
3. Teaching *PA* allows for greater printed word recognition.
____________________
*Below are phonemic awareness activities you can use:*
✓put sounds together.
e.g /p/o/t/=pot.
/I/mp/o/t/o/=impoto.
✓ break words apart into sounds.
eg: bataata=/b/a/t/aa/t/a.
Father= /f/a/th/er/.
✓ Identify rhyming words, identify likeness and differences in spoken words.

*Phoneme *Isolation* *and* *Identification**
Phoneme isolation skill is where students can identify specific phonemes in words. For example the sounds at the start of the word, the middle of the word and the end of the word. With beginning readers, these are monosyllabic words.
Here are some questions you may ask your students:
• What is the first sound in pig?
• What is the last sound in pig?
• What is the middle sound in pig?
____________________
Phoneme identification skills: Students can recognise the same sounds across multiple words, or they can identify a focus phoneme in multiple words.
Here are some questions you may ask your students for this skill:
• Which word starts with the ‘m’ sound – cat, fat, mat?
• What do these words have that are the same – mum, mat, mop?

#2022
Below is another way I apply the teaching from known to unknown.
If the learners are able to read local language and they know how to sound out letter sounds both in English and local languages.
Example:
ICIBEMBA-ENGLISH.
1. KAPU-CUP
2. SUPUNI-SPOON
3. SIKWEYA-SQUARE
4.GILEDI-GRADE
5. TIICHA- TEACHER
6. FOONI-PHONE
7. SEKO-CIRCLE
8. LEKITANGO-RECTANGLE.
9. TILAYANGO-TRIANGLE
10. ZILO-ZERO.

*Methods of teaching phonics.*
There are many strategies used in the teaching of phonics.
In some schools, phonics is taught as a subject while others we teach it has one of the skills or components of a literacy lesson.
Below is one of the methods used in teaching phonics;
*Synthetic Phonics*
Synthetic phonics uses a part to whole approach that teaches learners letter sound( grapheme-phoneme) relationships in a clearly defined incremental sequence. Learners are taught small groups of letter sounds during a short, brisk daily sessions so they can begin blending(synthesising) when reading and segmenting letter sounds in words when spelling.
*For example:*
After being taught the letter names and sounds /S/, /t/, /o/, /p/ learners can be supported to blend these letter sounds to read words such as "stop", "top", " pot".
*Note* when blending it's important to emphaize the initial, middle and last(final) sounds, as well learners can segment the sounds in these words to write them.
-----------------------------------
of letter sounds and name's is key.
# blending letter sounds to form and read/write words.
words into independent letter sounds.
please, exercise patience while we teach our learners.

*GAME*
*ACTIVITY NAME: STARTING/ ENDING SOUND SCAVENGER HUNT.*
*Description*: in this activity, children are separated into teams of 4-7 learners each. Each team is given a particular phoneme, and the team must find as many things as possible that start or end with that phoneme.
*Skills:*
Phonemic awareness, sound segmentation.
*Materials:*
Flash cards(words that contains different phonemes).
*Procedure:*
Separate learners into groups. Tell each team which phoneme they are hunting for and send them off to find words containing the phoneme. Call them back after 10 minutes. Give each group a chance to present the words having the phoneme given to the, making sure to emphasize the focus phoneme. Also make sure each lerner in each group shows at least one word.
-----------------------------------
Example:
*Teacher* We are going hunting today. Each group will be hunting something different. *Group 1* will be hunting for words that begin or end with the */s/*.
*Group 2* will be hunting for words that begin or end with /r/.
*Group3* will be hunting for words that begins or ends with /t/.
*Winning*
The most group with many words at the end of 10minutea or the time given to them wins.🤴🏻🫅🏻🤴🏻🤴🏻🤴🏻🫅🏻🫅🏻🫅🏻.
*Once the campers have returned,say:*
Good job. Group 1 can tell us the words you have found[ Each child stands up and shows the entire class what they found]
Group2.........
Group 3.........
Until all the groups are done.
Ok, there after count up the words! Which group picked the most?....
Thank you.
Play and let the learners have fun.

*PHONEMIC MATCHING*
PHONEMIC MATCHING is the ability to hear similar sounds in different words. This involves learning the following Skills:
*1. When presented with two similar words with beginning consonants, learner's determine whether the beginning sounds are the same or different:*
Example:
✓. Mat - Sat(Different ).
✓. Big - Bet (Same).
*2. When presented with two similar words with different ending consonants, learners determine whether the ending sounds are the same or different:*
Example:
✓. Sat - Sad ( different);
✓ Met - mat ( same).
*3. When presented with two similar words, learners determine whether the vowel sounds are the same or different:*
Example:
✓ Pig - Peg (different).
✓ Meet - Seat (same).
*NOTE* YOU ARE TO BE CONCERNED WITH THE VOWEL SOUND, NOT ITS SPELLING.
