Founded 20th August 1976 as English Teachers Association of Zambia (ETAZ). LATAZ has 530 affiliated members out of the over 2,600 prospective members.

It was renamed Language Teachers Association Zambia (LATAZ) on 7th July 2009 and formerly registered under the Societies Act Cap 119 of the Laws of Zambia. It has presence and structures in all 10 provinces and 104 districts of the country. The first national Chairman was Brian Tomlinson who was an expatriate teacher of English from Britain. Objectives include:
