For storing maize safely after harvest, the recommended option is a hermetic (airtight) storage bag rather than a regular sack.

Recommended bag types
- PICS bags (Purdue Improved Crop Storage)
- GrainPro Super Bags
- Other triple-layer hermetic bags

Key features the bag should have

- Airtight / Hermetic sealing
Prevents oxygen from entering, which kills or suppresses insects without chemicals.

- Multi-layer construction
Typically 2 inner polyethylene liners + 1 outer woven bag for strength.

- Moisture barrier
Keeps grain dry and prevents mold growth (especially aflatoxin risk).

- Durability and tear resistance
Outer layer should be strong enough for handling, stacking, and transport.

- Pest protection
Blocks insects and reduces infestation without pesticides.

- Reusability (if handled well)
Good hermetic bags can be reused for multiple seasons if not damaged.

Important usage tips

- Always store well-dried maize (≈13–14% moisture or less)
- Keep bags off the ground and away from direct sunlight
- Avoid puncturing the inner liners
