Back to School, Back to Structure: Why Routines and Procedures Matter

We are all excited for the beginning of term two after a well-deserved break! As we dive into the new term, one of the common challenges many schools face is helping students settle quickly and get back into the rhythm of learning.

After time away, students often need clear structure and direction to re-engage with the expectations of school life. One key ingredient that makes a powerful difference? Establishing
consistent routines and procedures.

✅ Why Routines Matter
Routines help create calm, predictable environments where learners feel secure. When students know what to expect, they are more likely to focus on their learning instead of worrying about what comes next. Well-established routines minimise disruptions, save time, and allow teachers to focus on teaching rather than constant classroom management.

✅ What Do Effective Routines Look Like?
Effective routines are simple, clearly communicated, and consistently reinforced. They can include:

 How students enter and exit the classroom
 How do they ask for help or sharpen pencils
 What to do when they finish work early
 How to transition between tasks or subjects
 How to manage materials and turn in assignments

Even routines around greeting each other in the morning or quieting down after break make a huge
impact!

✅ Start Strong
Teachers should model and practise routines with their learners from day one and revisit them regularly. It is also important to explain the why behind each routine so students understand its
purpose. Consider having students help co-create class expectations—it increases ownership and builds a stronger learning culture.

✅ A Learning-Focused Environment Starts with Structure
At Mfundisi Group, we believe that every school can set the tone for a successful term by investing a few days in establishing clear routines and procedures. These small steps create big
results—supporting student focus, improving classroom behavior, and laying the foundation for strong academic progress.
Let’s make Term 2 the most focused and impactful one yet—one routine at a time!

Ensuring Effective Implementation of Zambia’s New Curriculum: The Key Role of Teachers

Zambia has a long history of curriculum changes, each introduced with the hope of equipping learners with the knowledge, values, and skills necessary to drive the nation’s development agenda. However, despite these well-intended reforms, the expected transformation in education has remained elusive. The challenge has not been the curriculum but how it is implemented in the classroom.

A clear example is the 2013 curriculum, which sought to ensure that students acquired the skills to help them play a positive role in the country's development. A case in point was the history syllabus, which aimed to help learners apply historical knowledge, critically evaluate sources, write reasoned essays, and assess contemporary social, political, and economic challenges to propose solutions. However, in practice, the teaching of history largely remained unchanged, still focusing on rote memorization rather than critical thinking and analysis. As a result, history continued to be seen as a subject with little practical value, not because it lacked importance but because of how it was taught.

Now, with the introduction of the new curriculum, the government has once again set high expectations. The goal is to equip students with 21st-century skills—critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving. However, if the teaching approach remains rooted in outdated methods from the 18th century, this curriculum reform will fail to bring the desired change. The effectiveness of any curriculum depends not on its content alone but on how it is delivered in the classroom.

This is why schools must invest in empowering their teachers with the necessary skills to implement the new curriculum effectively. Teachers must have modern pedagogical strategies emphasising active learning, inquiry-based instruction, and real-world problem-solving. Without this shift, the cycle of ineffective curriculum implementation will continue, and Zambia will again miss the opportunity to transform its education system.

At Mfundisi Group, we support schools and ensure their teachers are well-prepared to deliver the new curriculum effectively. Remember, it is not the curriculum that changes the quality of education—it is the teacher. Investing in teacher capacity is the key to making curriculum reform a success. Let us work together to ensure that this time, curriculum change leads to a real, lasting impact on Zambia’s education system.

"No education system can outperform the quality of its teachers" Vikas Pota.

This is such a profound thought.

As teachers we should seriously reflect on the quality of the teaching we take to our class.

We should deliberately think about and explore ways to constantly improve our teaching.

No matter what technology or resources are placed at our disposal, we are still the most important ingredient that determines the learning outcomes of our students.

Great insights from the T4 conference. Great to hear from teachers from all parts of the world.

Despite the fact that we live in very diverse environments, we all have the same mission- to deliver the best education to our students.

That is why as Mfundisi Group, we take pride in delivering the best Continuous Professional Development to teachers to ensure they offer the best learning experience to their students.

We have especially enjoyed working with teachers to up skill their ed-tech skills as they offer remote teaching using the various learning management systems we have helped to deploy in their schools.
