There are no wild rabbits in Zambia. "Kalulu" the cunning one of so many African stories is not a rabbit but is a hare. Although the adults appear somewhat similar there are a number of fundamental differences between rabbits and hares. If given the opportunity rabbits will make their nest in burrows underground, the hare however prefers to live on the surface. Rabbits have large litters (families) often between six and eight young ones (bunnies) being born at a time. The young are born blind, naked, deaf, and inactive. The hare on the other hand has only one or two babies. The young hares, known as leverets, are born with their eyes open, covered with fur; they can hear and soon after birth become very active.
