The purpose of communication is to move people to action. This is why for any leader to communicate effectively, they need to have the desired outcome as the basis for communication.

It is for that reason that when communicating, you need to have the people you are communicating to in mind and make your message simple to be understood. Do not seek to be understood, but seek to make your team understand what you are saying.

For example, if you want an increase in performance, clearly explain what great performance looks like in simple terms…… I want to see reports submitted in A4, Times Roman, font size 12, the must cover weekly sales activities from Monday to Thursday, the report is due at 14 hours every Friday, is that clear?

An abstract statement such as, your reports must improve without defining IMPROVEMENT won’t move your team to your desired action.

A few steps to follow:
1. Be empathetic by putting yourself in the shoes of those you are communicating to, seek to understand them and what matters most to them.

2. Define your purpose for the meeting or message.

3. Articulate your reasoning logically and how it will benefit everyone.

4. Leave room for questions and feedback.

ORGANISATIONAL SUSTAINABILITY

Every organization desires to be sustainable, it desires to continue making impact on it clients and profitability for its shareholders. For this to happen, there's need for business strategy and at the core of this strategy is Human Capital investment, this is where the importance of knowing who and how to develop (invest) them comes in.

I know most leaders want to develop people, but sometimes there is a fear of not wanting to waste your resources on people that may either not turnout into the assests you want them to be or may end up leaving. Here are a few things you may need to consider:

1. Firstly understand that theres a big difference between high peformers and high potential people. A high performer is somene who is great at getting their job done, they do everything to achieve individual goals but have no leadership in them while a high potentilal person is someone who does their job well, values team work and corporate resuls, theyvhave inluence on the performance of other people.

2. They have a wide range of skills that are not just limited to their job performance but can be very critical for a leadership role.

3. They are loayl to the vision of the organisation and they think, breath, dream and bleed vision as they do their work.

4. They are self motivated, ambitous and exceed perfomance expectations.

5. They are innovative and creative. They think critically today about tomorrow as they make decisions today.

6. They are adaptable and resililiant under pressure, they do not break but look for new ways of doing things and ensuring they succeed by engaging others in solving critcal problems.

7. They value continous learning, they have an inquiry mind that leads them to always learning and becoming better. They place premium on personal growth.

Do you have such people around?

Leadership development is the process of enhancing an individual's ability to perform in a leadership role within an organization. Many leaders want to hold their team members accountable for leadership output that they have not invested in those they lead.

As you lead, who are you positively influencing to perfectly fit in their leadership role in your organization? Are you confident enough that you are investing in those you lead to lead better where they are today and tomorrow?

Remember, you have no business holding accountable people whom you have not developed!

In every organization, culture is the responsibility of the leadership.

Too often, leaders complain about toxicity, poor work attitude, ethics, people throwing each other under the bus etc, however, one thing they forgot is they are actually responsible for that behavior.

Anything you do not confront, you endorse. If you lead a team that has distractive behavior, confront that behavior and ensure there are consequences!

You are responsible for the culture of your team and organization!

Intelligence is defined as the ability to acquire knowledge and skills in order to apply it for success!

The simplest definition would be, “Intelligence is the ability to learn and skillfully apply what you learn! If that is the case, then anyone can be intelligent and the secret is in being humble enough to learn. As a leader, your level of effectiveness will be determined by your level of intelligence and your level of intelligence will be determined by your ability to learn!

AS THIS WEEK COMES TO AN END, WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED? If not, what will you learn before this week ends?

WAYS TO LEARN
1. Get feedback from your wife, colleagues, supervisors, Pastor, friend etc- listen to the feedback (Will talk more about this tomorrow)

2. Read a book that will help you sharpen your thinking and develop your skills

3. Sign up for a short term or long term course

4. Find a mentor or someone smarter than you to guide you in life

5. Google stuff ( Be careful not every source would be trusted), but as you do that, make sure you research extensively!

CRITICAL THINKING!
“Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, small minds discuss people.” - Eleanor Roosevelt

Critical thinking is a very important skill for both leadership and organizational sustainability, a leader who not only possess this skill but uses it is one who leads an organization into success without boundaries for today and tomorrow.

Critical thinking is the ability to analyze, synthesize and process information about a situation, idea, system or product in a logical manner to arrive at an objective and relevant solution. This is what lead to innovation and creativity!

CRITICAL THINKING IS NOT DISCUSSING AND CRITICIZING PEOPLE, NEITHER IS IT THE ABILITY TO EMOTIONALLY ARGUE WITH PEOPLE TO HAVE YOU WAY. To some extent, it requires good emotionally and mental intelligence to engage in it!

As 180deals we believe in you and thus we have developed tools and processes to help you develop this skill.

When it comes to team building, it is believed that a team where there's phycological safety yields the best results. A team is only a team when each team member's giftedness, uniqueness, and participation are counted in the results produced by any entity. If and when only one person's contributions are counted, then those are never team results!

Creating psychological safety is of utmost importance to achieving that and is the responsibility of the leader. One way to do that is by redefining failure into opportunities for growth, when team members know they can make mistakes and not be afraid to come out in the open without the fear of judgment, they will fire all their six cylinders to serve the organization.

Does your team have psychological safety?

We have heard a lot about problem solving and how that we are rewarded for the problems we solve, at 180Deals, we believe in that too, we also believe that no one is born with an attitude that does not want to solve problems, could it be that people just don't know how to identify problems and so they can not solve them? How can you solve a problem you do not know?

We have a tool of 8 principles that helps you to identify problems, one of them is developing a curiosity mindset, this mindset leads you into questioning things around you and challenging the status quo. For example, you work in an organization where everyone always comes late for meetings, if you do not see anything wrong with that, you can not do anything about it because you do not see it as a problem to solve! The first thing if say our meetings will start at 8, why do we always start at 8:15? Why is everyone okay with starting at 8:15? What are the policies of the organization about timekeeping?

As 180deals, we are here to help you learn how to identify problems.
