Another DAFI student by the name of Clautrida Mutabaruka (Nelson Mandela Essay Prize Competition Winner-2025) was featured on 5FM Radio and discussed at length the Zambian legal frameworks that guide refugee issues. Also talked about the DAFI Scholarship as a prestigious scholarship that supports refugee education in Zambia.

Thanks to the current government for the efforts in recognizing opportunities available for refugees; for example, during the commemoration of World Refugee Day 2025, the Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Honorable Jack Mwiimbu, emphasized that when there is a genuine refugee with genuine qualifications, employment is given to them. That demonstrated the recognition and inclusion of refugees in government opportunities.

Therefore, calling on relevant stakeholders, including UNHCR, through the Office of the Commissioner for Refugees, NGOs like Caritas Czech Republic in Zambia, and civil society organizations, like the Civil Liberties Union, for continued advocacy, and calling on the Zambian government to:
1. To amend laws or policies to recognize long-term refugees as "ordinarily resident," which should translate into citizenship.
2. Provide clearer pathways to citizenship for refugees who have lived lawfully and continuously in Zambia for many years, including children born in Zambia who have turned 18 years old.

ZNBC Featured Refugee Voice Through “All About Her”

Recognizing the unique challenges faced by refugee women, ZNBC invited Marie Franchesca, a DAFI alumna, to their morning talk show “All About Her,” a platform that profiles women’s stories of strength and resilience.

In a deeply inspiring interview, Marie Françoise shared her journey as a refugee in Zambia, speaking on resilience, hope, and the urgent need to revise refugee legal frameworks to promote inclusion in government education and employment opportunities.

She stressed the importance of distinguishing refugees from other foreign nationals to allow full integration and participation, even in entrepreneurship, highlighting how the high cost of investor permits limits refugee potential.

Marie called on the government to reconsider these barriers, emphasizing that refugees did not come to Zambia by choice and deserve the opportunity to thrive.

Impressed by her powerful journey and insights, ZNBC aired the interview on both TV and Radio, marking it as a significant step toward refugee inclusion as refugee students and graduates continue to contribute to public health, education, behavioral science, technology, and entrepreneurship.

DAFI students visited Kanyama Compounds (Caritas Czech Republic-Outreach Center), where they conducted vital medical checkups and actively participated in the Youth-Friendly Corner to inspire young people on various educational and career pathways. As a result of this engagement, a new initiative, "DAFI-Youths Connect," was created to promote ongoing education support between DAFI students and local youths, both refugees and the host community members.
