The boy was found with a mobile phone and a knife in his schoolbag, and ended up in the soup. I sort of understood the knife bit, but was utterly confused about the mobile phone. Surely they must have found innocent things like pens, pencils and books, but why make a big fuss about the mobile phone. I said, O well, I must be missing something.
Today, I was at another school. Evils dropping into the conversation between a furious teacher and a learner, I could not believe the reason the learner was being publicly censured. The teacher found a mobile phone in her bag.
So I go in to have my meeting with the administrator, appreciating our eLearning platform, he leant over his desk and wihispered to me," this is why I do not confiscate the mobile phones from learners as my predecessor did, I simply ask them to use them at a right time.
Though heartened by his sentiments, I still thought, here we are as a company, promoting eLearning in schools and hoping with ease of access to mobile phones, many children can now enjoy quality education. I concluded, unless school policies change, children who could otherwise benefit from eLearning, will miss out. I am afraid, as schools attempt to chuck bath water, they are probably discarding the baby too.
