International Youth Day 2019: “Transforming Education”
11 April 2019

The theme of International Youth Day 2019, “Transforming education”, highlights efforts to make education more relevant, equitable and inclusive for all youth, including efforts by youth themselves. Rooted in Goal 4 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” – International Youth Day 2019 will examine how Governments, young people and youth-led and youth-focused organizations, as well as other stakeholders, are transforming education and how these efforts are contributing to the achievement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Statistics remind us that significant transformations are still required to make education systems more inclusive and accessible: (1) Only 10% of people have completed upper secondary education in low income countries; (2) 40 % of the global population is not taught in a language they speak or fully understand; and (3) over 75 % of secondary school age refugees are out of school. In addition, indigenous youth, young people with disabilities, young women, young people belonging to vulnerable groups or in vulnerable situations, etc. are facing additional challenges to access education that respects their diverse needs and abilities as well as reflects and embraces their unique realities and identities.

Making education more relevant, equitable and inclusive is crucial to achieving sustainable development. Education is a ‘development multiplier’ in that it plays a pivotal role in accelerating progress across all 17 Sustainable Development Goals, be it poverty eradication, good health, gender equality, decent work and growth, reduced inequalities, action on climate or building peaceful societies. Education should lead to effective learning outcomes, with the content of school curricula and pedagogy being fit for purpose, not only for the 4th industrial revolution and the future of work and life, but also for the opportunities and challenges that rapidly changing social contexts bring.

The Zambian Association of Literacy (ZALIT) launched the Literacy Insaka Project in Matero community on Friday 19th July, 2019. The event was graced by Kapwepwe ward area Councillor, Hon. Patrick Salubusa. The Literacy Insaka is a project of the Zambian Association of Literacy in collaboration with Zambia Airports Corporation Limited (ZACL). The pilot project seeks to improve literacy proficiencies by the use of narratives told from both visual and audio sources, in both resource and non-resource constrained areas.

ZALIT and ZACL both acknowledge that literacy is critical to economic development as well as individual and community well-being. With the launch of the Literacy Insaka Project, ZALIT hopes to increase accessibility to literacy materials and tools among resource and non-resource constrained communities and also increase community involvement in literacy activities with support from our partners ZACL.

The project seeks not only to improve literacy through storytelling, but also in the generation of local reading content. All the stories shared at the Insakas will be transcribed into story books, by professional writers.

The Zambian Association of Literacy is very grateful to ZACL for their continued support towards literacy projects and programmes being implemented by the organisation as this shows the level of commitment to fighting illiteracy and the importance of literacy development cannot be over emphasized.

ZALIT would also like to thank Alliance for Accountability Advocates Zambia (AAAZ), Concept Developers Initiative (CDI) and the Ward Development Committee (WDC) of Kapwepwe Ward in Matero for their effort in making this project a reality.

Did you know today (20th March, 2019) was World Story Telling Day (WSD)!

Story Telling Day wasn’t always celebrated globally. The first such day was observed in Sweden in the early 1990s and was called Alla Berättares Dag, or All Narrators Day. Soon storytellers around the world picked up the holiday and it has now become a global “celebration of oral storytelling.” Each celebration since 2004 has a theme associated with it, including strong women, dreams, neighbors, water, and monsters and dragons.
The theme for this year’s WSD is Myths, Legends and Epics.

If you did not get a chance to tell a story in your home, school, community or place of work, spare 30 minutes of your time tomorrow to share creative stories. Feel free to share with us, your most creative stories on our wall or via [email protected]
