STATEMENT ON COVID-19 IN ZAMBIA
LUSAKA (Monday 28th June, 2021)
Good Afternoon members of the press, Countrymen, Women and he Youth.
For our Country to effectively respond to the COVID 19 pandemic, we need all citizens to take full responsibility and ensure full adherence to the Public Health and social measures which have been prescribed.
Unfortunately, we still have a lot of work to do in moving the COVID 19 fight from our hospitals to the communities.
We still see and hear a lot of focus from members of the public on what is happening in hospitals rather than on how we can prevent and mitigate further transmission of the infections in our communities - This is the narrative we need to change.
We reiterate that the COVID 19 situation is our country has been propelled by laxity in adhering to Public health guidance, super spreader events, the cold weather and more importantly the variants of concern we have detected.
Despite the challenging phase we are experiencing, we are encouraged by our rate of recovery at 84% with a total of 126,441 people having recovered since COVID 19 was confirmed in our country.
Further in the last 24 hours we saw a total of 1,859 patients discharged with 114 from our isolation and treatment facilities and 1,745 from those under home management and as a people through unity of purpose we can build on this.
We would like to assure you that Government remains committed to ensuring that COVID 19 is brought under control in the shortest possible time.
We urge members of the public to take the directives and measures being prescribed as not being punitive but a means to save lives, livelihoods and the economy of this country. Its therefore imperative that we all participate and comply.
Fellow Countrymen and Women;
Our COVID 19 response continue to be premised on enhanced Prevention, Monitoring and Treatment.
It is clear that these pillars require continuous investment and we would like to assure members of the Public that Government and its development partners, United Nations Family, Private Sector, Civil Society and other stakeholders has continued mobilizing resources to support the response.
We are delighted to announce that in the coming days we will be receiving support from both the World Health Organization (WHO) and Africa CDC in terms of commodities and technical expertise.
With the increased admissions to hospitals, our Health Care workers have been stretched.
Government through the Ministry of Health remains committed to providing the various tools, Personal Protective equipment and a conducive working environment.
We will ensure our health workers are given all the necessary support during this difficult period. I direct the Provincial Health Directors and Senior Medical Superintendents to ensure that this is done without fail.
We take this opportunity to urge all health care workers who have been recruited in the last two weeks to report to their duty station failure to which they will be replaced soon.
In the last 24 hours, we administered a total of 456 second dose AstraZeneca vaccinations. Our cumulative vaccinations to date now stand at 135,299; Dose 1 AstraZeneca and 3,321 Dose 2 AstraZeneca and 6,826 Dose 1 Sino pharm and 6,215 Dose 2 Sino pharm.

Among those currently under admission, 917 (68%) are on Oxygen therapy and 195 (14%) are in critical condition; 243 of the currently hospitalized were new admissions.
In the last 24 hours, all ten provinces recorded COVID 19 deaths, with Sixty-Nine (69) new deaths reported.
The breakdown of the new deaths by province is as follows: Lusaka 31; Copperbelt 11; Southern 11; Eastern 8; Western 3; Central 1; Luapula 1; Muchinga 1; Northern 1; and North-western 1.

Country men and women;
there is hope on the horizon – We can significantly change the course of the Pandemic in the next three weeks if we worked as a collective.
Let us all adhere to the Prescribed public health guidelines and prevent further spread of COVID 19 in our country.
Stay safe and let’s protect one another.
God bless you all.
