Redefined Success; Thinking beyond Grade 12 Results
My niece has just received her grade twelve results. She sat for a total of nine subjects. She was at Njase Girls Secondary School. In one subject (RE) she got a three. In the remaining eight, she got ones only (distinctions). In total she has eleven points in nine subjects.
The elated face of all family members is simply inspiring.
Yet a part of me feels pity for her. I am sorry to say grade twelve results mean nothing if not accompanied by other things. There are at least seven very important components that define successful living. Here they are;
1. WHAT DO I REALLY WANT?
I have found many graduates who actually regret what they studied. Imagine spending seven years studying something you regret. The implication of this is that it is possible to occupy ones time with emptiness.
2. WHAT ARE MY TRUE PROCLIVITIES?
A proclivity is an inclination. An appointment with your potential. It is a desire to outshine yourself. In more technical terms, it is a natural appreciation of what comes easy for you but hard for others.
3. HOW DEEP ARE YOUR SOCIAL TENTACLES?
Zambians are generally cultured (conservative) and in that same regard, it can be said that Zambians rely on social approvals for validation, motivation and in some cases for retardation. When you can decide on your own early in life how much or how little you want to depend on others, it will liberate you to pursue your dreams.
4. AVOIDING TEMPORARY SATISFACTION
I met a man yesterday who always tells me how great a motivational talk I tendered to them some eleven years ago. I am always flattered by his recollection of everything. Unfortunately he is guilty of not paying attention to his own photolithography. Lithography is a process of projecting light and printing it on to flat surfaces. Many young people are busy printing wrong images of themselves into the concious of society. If a youth can avoid this temptation, theirs is victory in life and in academia.
5. RELATIONSHIPS
Agree with me that life is more than these three words; "I love you." Recently a certain grade twelve student never wrote his final exams. He committed su***de because his girlfriend rejected him. What a loss. The way I love Nshima and Kalembula and then I leave that over an opinion?
6. SPECIALIST LEADERSHIP
So then what is true success? True success is finding one, two or three things you want to be absolutely great at and going for it. Jim Collins speaks of moving from Good to Great. Leadership is a lonely affair of chasing your true passion. True passion leads to true potential.
7. MONEY IS THE SAME
Last week I gave a lift to a man from Mongu to Lusaka. I needed company and this man gave me more than that. He made my ten hour drive look like a three hour ride. He had just returned from fensing a game farm for the richest man in Mongu. He quickly showed me pictures on his phone of many game farms and ranches they have worked on. His phone kept on ringing through out the journey. All I saw in this man was a billionaire. I was so proud of him.
CONCLUSION
Getting six points or nine points or even thirty points is simply a point in life but it is not the main point. The ultimate in life is finding your space, putting food on your table and finding true happiness.

I am the same person in both pictures. I am just as proud on the left as I am on the right. These pictures were taken just months apart.
The difference between you and I is just this right here; you are too ashamed to be a landlord at the “lower” side of the spectrum.
How you start does not matter. Just start. How you finish matters more.

HOW TO KNOW WHICH BUSINESS TO START
There are a thousand business ideas that will run through your mind. You can’t chase them all but you can settle for something that will be easier for you and hopefully profitable.
Here is a 12 step guide to inspire you.
1. DON’T JUST COPY
The biggest mistake many make is just to copy and paste. In computing this is possible. But in business it is a danger.
2. STARTING TOO BIG
Many people start too big. Never start with all your capital. Only commit 10% to 20% of your capital. Starting a business is like taking a bath. NEVER JUST JUMP IN A BATH TAB OR SHOWER. Start with your pinkie toe.
3. ARE YOU READY TO DELEGATE?
Some businesses are excellent. But the owners can’t grow because they want to control everything. Entrepreneurship is toil, sweat and pain especially in the beginning. But at some point you must allow others to handle some aspects of your business.
4. DO YOU HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE?
If you told me to open up a nuclear reactor or plant today and gave me all the money in the world to do it I will refuse. I have zero experience, zero desire, zero passion for such a business. But if you asked me to open up a hydro electric company I will absolutely jump into it. Both are power companies but one is more physics and the other is chemistry. I am the 1991 best physics student in my country. So I have experience in hydro power. Plus I would use the dam for tourism. I have experience in that as well. I would also do fish farming. I have experience in that too. Your experience is capital. Don’t waste it.
5. LONGEVITY
Business is not a three month vacation. It is long term venture. Business is about the next generation. Statistics show that it takes 4-5 years to settle in business. Don’t start a business and you quit after two months. You might as well keep your money.
6. ATTITUDE TOWARDS MONEY
Yesterday I spent an hour with a very rich business man. He received about 5 calls while I was with him. All they talked about where payments of K1.7million, K20million. “Have you received the transfer of K8million?” They kept asking each other. “We have 900tonnes and we have transported 800tonnes. We will be done by next Friday with 100tonnes.”
I was inspired.
After the calls he turned to me and said “where were we Mr. Nawa?” In my heart I said “Heaven”.
7. ATTITUDE TOWARDS CUSTOMERS
Do you see clients as a burden or a blessing? Do you see them as intruders or as contributors to your success? At our companies our staff come first. Then our customers. Any employee who ill treats clients will feel my presence.
8. ATTITUDE TOWARDS WORK
You can’t succeed in business if you hate work. You must absolutely love work. Running a business is hard smart work. Somedays you barely eat, others you barely sleep. Lazy people have no place in the business world.
9. LOOKING FOOLISH
One of my businesses is a transport business. I tell you I look “foolish” as a truck driver. Even when I was single I can’t even count how many girls said no to me because to them I did a low class job. As a businessman or woman you will look silly. But businesses are like B-hives. They look foolish outside but inside there is honey.
10. DIVERSION, DIVERSITY, DETERMINATION
In business we must move money around. It’s called diversity. Once you make money somewhere remove some and put it in another venture. I recommend real estate. I channel almost all my profits into houses and other real estate. Don’t leave all your money in one business. Its too risky.
I shared this method with one farmer. He had 1,000 cattle. He kept refusing. Unfortunately an outbreak of Denkede wiped out half his animals. Remember, “Never put all your eggs in one basket.”
11. RECOVERY FROM LOSS
You will make profits and you will make loses. What matters is to get up and start afresh. Learn from your mistakes and make sure your tomorrows are better than your yesterday. Just because a business failed does not mean it was a wrong business.
12. DANCE IN ADVENTURE
Business is a dance in the rain, business is a weave in the forest and a tear in passion. Business is eroding fear while evading poverty. Business is planting trees for the next generation and sipping milk in a cocktail of coconut and cashew nuts. Business is a legitimate leguminous activity that is both decisive and deciduous. Business is business.
So appreciate its presence and approach it with a belt in your waist because it is quite a load. Carry extra plates because it is a mouthful. Be strong for it is a mountain. Be happy because the profits are sweeter than honey. Business is destiny: a predetermined occurrence of events that is both fortuitous and inevitable.
God bless you and remember to start small.
Have a beautiful business journey.

5 Things You May not Know about Me
Many people see the public figure but there is a small boy in MCNLIVE. Here are five things you may not know.
1. I am a very quiet 🤫 and shy person. I don't like laud noises or disturbances. I may have a gift of speaking and writing but I am almost always the quiet 🤐 one. In school I Was accidentally on the noise makers list. Deep down I don't talk much. I am not sure 😃😊 if you believe me. 😂
2. I am a clean 🫧 geek 🤓. I love a clean house, car, kitchen, yard. I have always been like this. Even in secondary school I was like this. My mother was a very clean person and my father too. So we grew up in a very clean environment. I am so lucky that my wife is even cleaner. She keeps the house, the cars and everyone clean. So I love clean beddings, clean everything. Sometimes I wash one car twice in a day. That's very normal for me.
3. I enjoy solving problems. My children call me Mr. Fixer Man. I can fix anything. I don't want to see a bulb 💡 that does not work or a car that is broken down or a tap that is leaking. All my cars are OK and each one has everything it needs at all time for a long trip including international trips. When I pack a car the previous night, I always make sure it's on full tank with all valid road taxes etc. I want everything around me to be functional. Even the radio and remote and shovel at home must work. I don't believe in things that don't work. Your environment could be a slight reflection of your mindset.
4. I love cooking. As a child we used to cook in tins (ma ndwii). So I love cooking. I can cook almost any food including sea food. I can cook Nigerian food, American food and European food. Not sure about Asian food though. So every week I tell my lovely wife to take a break and I cook. Usually every Sunday. Boy does she love it. My children enjoy my food. My staff too. Even my neighbors enjoy my food.
5. I think a lot. Sometimes maybe 🤔 too much. I take time to think, analyze, plan and execute my work. I assess issues even from a devil's advocate point of view. Brainstorming is a stepping stone to me. I am not afraid to be wrong. I don't see myself as the exclusive holder of truth. So I remain open to new ideas. But at the same time I am dogmatic about those unwavering fundamentals. For example, respect for fellow human beings regardless of their age or status is an unwavering truth. Keeping ones word in life and in business is a non negotiable matter. There we don't compromise. Another example is service driven business and leadership. You can't fake your way to success. You must follow protocols.
CONCLUSION
I am truly just a simple man from Chelstone who cares about humanity and development. Nothing much.
My name is Mubita C. Nawa and yes I still drive a vitz though not always. 😂
