If you're the kind of leader who finally becomes a CEO--or whatever your dream job is--and you stop craving knowledge, you'll hinder your ability to lead. Great leaders prioritize learning because they prioritize growing.

Successful leaders never stop learning. Whether they read books, learn new skills, study academic or business journals, learn from their employees or peers, or strive for change through innovation, they all share a passion for learning. Learning is the key to growth, and leaders who understand the purpose of continuous development raise the tide of everyone around them.

Great leaders are often judged by their accomplishment but what makes them stands out among the crowd is their ability to change someone's life positively. The greatest success anyone can have in their life is their ability to inspire and motivate someone to become the very best version of themselves.

Ego Is the Enemy of Good

Our ego is like a target we carry with us. And like any target, the bigger it is, the more vulnerable it is to being hit. In this way, an inflated ego makes it easier for others to take advantage of us. Because our ego craves positive attention, it can make us susceptible to manipulation. It makes us predictable. When people know this, they can play to our ego. When we’re a victim of our own need to be seen as great, we end up being led into making decisions that may be detrimental to ourselves, our people, and our organization.

Effective leaders take a personal interest in the long-term development of their employees, and they use tact and other social skills to encourage employees to achieve their best. It isn’t about being “nice” or “understanding”—it’s about tapping into individual motivations in the interest of furthering an organization wide goal. by W.C.H. Prentice

Exceptional leaders are the ones who stand up for their people and support them when they are experiencing their most challenging moments. They also encourage and push their team to take on bigger challenges. Exceptional leaders treat you as you deserve to be treated: With dignity and respect.

They don't strike you down with belittling comments and never intentionally try to place you in an embarrassing or demeaning position in front of others, whether colleagues or clients. Instead, they show a genuine interest in and concern for others. They ask you, "How are you?" or "How's your family?" And then, they listen and express genuine concern.

Exceptional leaders always find time to express their appreciation for their team's work and have this unique ability to inspire and motivate people to believe in something beyond their own limiting thinking.

The Essence of a Great Leadership

As a leader, your people should be excited about their work and eager to make a difference, not to make a living but to make a difference.

That's the essence of great leadership, and as John Mackey puts it, if you are lucky enough to be someone's employer, you have a moral responsibility to ensure your people are eager to come to work every day.

If serving is below you, leadership is beyond you.

You must be willing to place the needs of others above your own. When you are called a leader, you must ensure that your people are inspired and motivated every day to make a difference. That's what we call leadership, and that's what real leaders do.
