SERVICE CHIEFS TOUR UNZA PROJECT TO APPRECIATE ONGOING WORKS

The Zambia National Service (ZNS) Commander Lieutenant General Engineer Maliti Solochi II this morning led Defence and Security Service Chiefs on a tour of the ongoing University of Zambia (UNZA) sewer system rehabilitation project to appreciate the progress made so far.

Speaking on behalf of the Service Chiefs after the tour, the Zambia Army Commander Lieutenant General Geoffrey Zyeele praised President Hakainde Hichilema for entrusting the Defence Force with the ambitious project.

“We thank the Republican President and Commander-in-Chief, Mr Hakainde Hichilema, for giving the Defence Force a challenge such as the UNZA sewer system project, which has clearly showcased the expertise within our ranks,” Lt Gen Zyeele said.

He commended ZNS personnel and all stakeholders involved for the dedication and professionalism demonstrated throughout the project.

And Speaking as Chairperson of the Central Joint Operations Committee (CJOC), Lt Gen Zyeele underscored the preparedness of the Defence and Security Wings to augment the current manpower with additional qualified personnel should circumstances warrant.

He stated that the Zambia National Service (ZNS) has been spearheading the operation, with the Zambia Army, Zambia Air Force and Zambia Correctional Service providing support as required, while the Zambia Police Service has been responsible for maintaining security and safeguarding public order.

Lt Gen Zyeele noted that while the project may appear small on paper and social media, the reality on the ground tells a different story.

“When you come physically, you appreciate the quantum of work and the amount of material involved. It is a huge project that cannot be fully understood from reports alone,” he said.

The Army Commander further expressed admiration for the quality of workmanship, describing the project as a remarkable achievement despite the absence of a pre-existing blueprint.

“This is a design-and-build undertaking. The meticulous works we have seen are impressive, and I wish to thank ZNS for a job well done,” he added.

Lt Gen Zyeele said the project reflects President Hichilema’s vision that the Defence Force should contribute meaningfully to national development during times of peace.

Meanwhile, UNZA Students Union (UNZASU) President Mr Kabaso Mwanto said the visit by the Service Chiefs demonstrated Government’s commitment to improving student welfare and learning conditions.

“We thank President Hichilema for providing students with a conducive learning environment and for supporting this critical sanitation project,” Mr Mwanto said.

He also praised ZNS for employing 13 engineering students on the project, saying the initiative was equipping them with valuable hands-on industry experience while contributing to the university’s infrastructure development.

Mr Mwanto disclosed that beyond the sewer rehabilitation works, ZNS had upgraded student hostels by installing lights, electrical sockets, showers, toilets and sinks, adding that UNZA is fully satisfied with the quality of works and delivery by the Service.
