Protests and demands for accountability, inclusion, and transformation led by "Gen Z" youth are challenging entrenched governance systems. In this op-ed, I argue that the choices leaders make now will either empower the next generation and drive progress or deepen the divide, risking stagnation and shaping the continent’s future for decades.

Chad’s parliament has overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment removing presidential term limits—a move critics say is designed to help President Mahamat Idriss Deby stay in power longer. Deby first took power in 2021 after rebels killed his father, longtime ruler Idriss Deby Itno, in a gun battle that ended his 30 years in power. He was then elected head of state in May 2024 for five years in a contested vote boycotted by most opposition parties. The reform also creates a deputy prime minister post, extends parliamentary terms from five to six years, and restores immunity for government officials.
