Title: Career Transitions

Navigating careers is not an easy task, this rings even louder when you’re unable to find a job in your chosen field or profession. The truth is that not everyone pursues a career in the direction they expected, and that’s completely alright. The world is full of successful people who found success after going through a transition in their career.
We have the likes of Vera Wang who started out as a figure skater before becoming a couture powerhouse and Ronald Regan, (40th US president) was actually an actor in his younger years - who would’ve thought right?!😅

Locally, we also have our own career transition success stories: our very own Director at When Females Lead, Chimuka Muyovwe Samatebele, (Associate Director, Financial Markets, Standard Chartered Bank Zambia), started out with a BSc in Biomedical Sciences while Bryson Hamanzuka, CEO of Benson Consulting Services Limited, has an Engineering Degree from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology - the list is endless!

The world does not always hand us the opportunities we expect, especially in the difficult job market present in countries like Zambia. However, the success stories of the individuals above show us that hard work, determination, passion and drive will always speak for themselves, whether you’re “qualified” in the traditional sense or not.
Human beings have an incredible ability to transfer their skills and intelligence across professions. So, in case you’re like me from 2 years ago, fresh out of university and not being handed the opportunities you expected, don’t be afraid to think outside the box and expand your horizon. Career success and fulfilment comes in various 'shapes and sizes'. Any opportunity that enables an environment for growth, supports upskilling and furthering of education is worth the plunge.

I end with a quote from another career transition fellow, Zewelani Phiri, who went from intern to Manager at AbInBev in just a year, she said:

“Your perceived limits have the nasty habit of looking countless; it's important to know what your strengths are. Read, apply, repeat. Mistakes are bound to happen (regardless of experience) and despite how they feel, they aren't the end of the world. What's important is learning from them and getting back up again.”
