How often do we integrate indigenous grains like finger millet into our daily diets?

Yesterday, admin procured 25 kg of whole finger millet for household consumption. Next on the list is orange maize which is rich in provitamin A carotenoids to support eye health. Admin's goal is to prepare nshima using a 1:1 blend of finger millet and orange maize meal.

As VAWI, we believe in practicing what we advocate: promoting sustainable, indigenous, and nutrient-dense food systems.

Nutritional value of finger millet (per 100g):
Energy: ~336 kcal | Carbohydrates: ~72 g | Protein: ~7.3 g | Fat: ~1.3 g | Fibre: ~3.6 g
Calcium: ~344 mg | Iron: ~3.9 mg | Magnesium: ~137 mg | Phosphorus: ~283 mg | Potassium: ~408 mg

Why it matters:
Finger millet is exceptionally rich in calcium and provides key minerals (magnesium, potassium) that support bone and cardiovascular health, alongside fibre for satiety and digestive health.
