SOYA BEANS HARVEST BY AGRONOMIST H.KANYIMBO

Harvesting soya beans can be done when the crop as reached its full maturity(Dry). This happens when the crop leaves start turning yellow and suddenly the leaves completely fall off and the pods turn brown, leaving the pods to be clearly seen on the stems . Maturity can also be checked by shaking the soya crop ,once the seeds in the pod rattle that will give you a clear picture of its maturity.

At the this stage the farmer should quickly get into the field and start harvesting the soya crop to avoid losses that are caused by shattering (popping) in the field . You can make heaps in the field to complete the drying , this should be done when the rains have gone . If we are still receiving rain and you notice your crop as matured , you are better off harvesting it and placing it in a shed away from rain to dry for a few days 3 to 5 days with good sunshine.

Once the drying is done you can start beating the soya crop on a clean laid down sack or plastic . For beating you can use sticks, the beating should be done lightly to avoid cracking the soya seed. Lastly ,ensure to remove the debris once the seed as been separated from the pods for proper packing in sacks . Debris includes pod covers, soil,stones,plants e.t.c In agriculture terms the removal of seeds from the pods is known as Threshing.

The seed can also be left to dry for a few more days after threshing before packing ,this is to avoid packing wet seed . For commercial farmers they use a combine harvester to do the above job,farming made easy through technology.

Storage ,ensure to store the packed soya seed in a clean and well ventilated room on pallets or any wooden stand to avoid ground insects.

Please ensure to properly harvest and store the soya beans seed as a poorly harvested and stored seed will lead to poor germination if the farmer intends to recycle the seed .

A good soya beans yield which was well managed should give you 2.5ton/ha and above that’s 50bags of 50kg .

Soya prices this year are extremely good ,don’t fall for cheap offers.
