In my practice as a Clinical Officer, I have seen many babies wearing this type of cloth around the waist. Sometimes there is a folded piece of cloth inside.

Some parents believe that the cloth helps to hold the baby’s hips, make the bones strong, prevent bow legs, or help the baby grow well.
However, these are mostly traditional beliefs, and there is no good medical evidence that the cloth can improve a baby’s hips.

A baby’s legs and hips need to move freely for normal development. Tight binding around the hips can be harmful and may affect normal hip development.

As health workers, we should respect cultural practices while also educating parents about safe practices for their babies.
