G12 Results are out, now what's next? π€
By Modest Chisha, teacher of Biology & Chemistry - Lunte Girls' Technical Secondary School
Dear school leavers, congratulations on your successful completion of secondary education. Welcome to SOCIETY.
Now listen π
as you look at what to do next, prioritize your talents and interests. Look around you, what's that thing you enjoy when doing it with less difficulties. It doesn't mean that if you managed to obtain distinctions in Math, Pure Physics and Design & Technology then you should go and study engineering or if you have distinctions in Pure Chemistry & Biology then you should you go for medicine. You might have otianed distinctions in sciences and mathematics out of sheer hard work and not passion or interest.
Talking from experience, I remember my close aunt wanted me to go and study medicine or any health related course because of my G12 results especially in sciences and mathematics. I turned her down and did not listen to her advice..
No matter how prestigious some careers may look, follow your heart, passion and interests. This is why I never listened to my aunt's advice because, as a young school leaver, I had already known my interest by then which was education; imparting knowledge in others.
I discovered my passion for teaching when my uncle first gave me an opportunity to teach at a named school in Lusaka. A school leaver from a village managed to teach in town with ease and passion and my pupils passed that year and appreciated my work. That's how I came to know that I was called to be a teacher.
During my teaching I taught Sciences, Mathematics and Accounts. Among all these subjects I enjoyed more when teaching Sciences and that is how I decided to go and study Bachelor of Science with education (Bsc.Ed) at the University of Zambia and up to now I'm a proud teacher of Biology and Chemistry.
Now imagine if I had done something I wasn't passionate about, I wouldn't have been this happy today.
I encourage you all to choose your careers wisely. Your career should align with your passion and life interests. In most cases people won't tell you the truth about some of these programs more especially those that start with Bachelor of Science.....π They sound so nice to the extent that you may feel like insulting your ancestors when given an opportunity to go and study...
Remember there's life after tertiary education just like you are facing life after secondary school.
Go for something that you would be happy with and be relevant in the next 10 years to come and more.
I wish you well and God bless you in this new chapter of your lives.
