Su***de cases in Zambia from 2019 to 2023

We have been inviting you all to join us in the call to support the boy child. Well, today we have come with numbers. We firstly share our condolences to the unknown families of each person who committed su***de. While su***de is bad to both males and females, we would like the public to learn something from the gap.

To start with, we appreciate the Zambia police (Headquarters) for promptly providing us with these statistics once requested upon. It is indeed significant that we take this road together and come up with as many solutions as possible to improve the situation in our country.

2550 males ended their own lives in 5 years while 306 females did the same in the same period. Su***de happens in each and every country but the gap here brings many questions. As YBA, we see this gap to be so due to the fact that the boy child is being neglected. Otherwise, what would be the reason?

Boys and men face mental health challenges and struggle in silence. Why do they struggle in silence? Because they are taught to suppress their emotions leaving them with limited outlets to express pain or seek help. This emotional isolation in many cases lead to depression, anxiety, and in tragic cases, su***de.

The statistics tell a heartbreaking story. For every girl who dies by su***de, there are over 7 boys who face the same fate. This is not just a number, it’s a wake-up call to address the systematic lack of support for the boy child.

As YBA, we are committed to supporting the boys in;
1.Education; empowering them with knowledge and opportunities for a better future.
2.Mentorship; providing guidance and role models to help them navigate life’s challenges
3.Healthcare; including mental health services to address their emotional wellbeing.

What you can do to alleviate this this tragedy;
1.Listen: be there for the boys in your life without judgement.
2.Advocate: help us spread awareness about mental health and su***de prevention
