Strengthening Community Action Against Gender-Based Violence
Last week we successfully conducted an orientation meeting for Village Advocates aimed at enhancing their capacity to prevent and respond to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) within their communities.
The orientation covered key topics such as SGBV, gender and safeguarding, basic counseling skills, the legal consequences of GBV, referral pathways, and the roles and responsibilities of Village Advocates. Participants were equipped with knowledge and practical skills to identify, report, and refer cases while promoting the safety, dignity, and rights of survivors.
Village Advocates play a vital role in community mobilization, awareness creation, and linking survivors to available services. Their involvement is important in building communities that are informed, protective, and free from all forms of violence.
We thank all participants for their active engagement and commitment to championing the fight against GBV. Together, we can create safer and more inclusive communities for women, men, girls, and boys.

Sharing a meal under the shade of a tree, with laughter and love! Here we believe that, you don't need a special occasion or fancy dining hall to serve a meal or make a child happy.
At place of happiness, this is where something extraordinary happens, memories are made and connections are built.

A few weeks ago, Bakashana/Balumendo Basambilile conducted a community sensitization meeting in Mulanshi Village, Kasama District. The meeting brought together traditional leaders and members of the Community Crime Prevention Unit (CCPUs).
We had training officers from Kasama Central Police. The discussions focused on the roles and responsibilities of the CCPU, procedures for making an arrest, the effects of corruption, and common offences under the Penal Code.
The training also covered survivor support, protection of evidence, confidentiality, community awareness, and strengthening collaboration among key stakeholders within the community. It encouraged active participation, commitment, and cooperation from both traditional leaders and members of the Community Crime Prevention Unit.
An empowered community is a safe community. This meeting marks another important step towards creating a more responsive, supportive, and secure environment for all. We are grateful Lawyers Without Boarders for the support.
Bakashana Balumendo Basambilile (Let the young people learn) is truly a place to laugh, learn, and ask questions!
It’s our honor to be so many people’s ’safe place’.

Accusations of witchcraft have caused deep harm in many communities, especially for older women.
What was once connected to powerful traditions, healing, wisdom, and spiritual belief has too often been twisted into a way to isolate, blame, and punish women. Today, many older women live under constant suspicion — accused without evidence, feared without reason, and shunned by the very communities they helped raise.
These accusations can destroy lives. Women are abandoned by family, chased from their homes, denied dignity, and in the worst cases, attacked or killed. Too often, age, poverty, widowhood, disability, or simply being outspoken becomes “proof” of something that was never true.
No woman should live in fear because of superstition, jealousy, grief, or misunderstanding. No woman should be treated as dangerous simply because she is old, vulnerable, or different.
We must protect older women. We must challenge harmful accusations. We must teach our communities that suspicion is not evidence, and tradition should never be used as an excuse for cruelty.
Older women are mothers, grandmothers, leaders, storytellers, caregivers, and keepers of history. They deserve respect, safety, and justice — not fear, rejection, or violence.
