Paint the Movement: Moving Bodies. Growing Minds

Paint the Movement: Moving Bodies. Growing Minds 4 day learning event bringing physical therapy to special needs children in rural Zambia Either way, we want to expand the possibilities.

We are going back to Zambia with the goal of helping physically disabled children at Chileshe Chepela Special Needs School with a week-long learning event. We will be training 35 teachers innovative and creative physical therapy techniques so that they may utilize materials and equipment they already have. We will also focus deeply on fine motor skill development and how this technique can strengt

hen both physiological and neurological weaknesses. We believe learning is most effective when it is stimulating and engaging, so although our sessions will focus on imparting proper PT techniques, a dialogue about the artistic applications of these techniques will run throughout. Honing a student's fine motor skills could mean the repetition of a single letter or it could mean the creation of a paper airplane. This training will give the teachers the basic skills needed to conduct effective physical therapy and will challenge the educators to create an engaging learning environment that promotes artistic freedom. On the final day, students and teachers will come together and paint a mural at the school with everything we got; from the fine motor skills development to the hand prints of the children. It will be a chance to bring art to these children, something that they rarely get.
