PRESIDENT HICHILEMA LEADS NATION IN MOURNING PARAMOUNT CHIEF MPEZENI IV

President Hakainde Hichilema has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of His Majesty Paramount Chief Mpezeni IV of the Ngoni people, describing the traditional leader as a revered custodian of culture and a unifying symbol of Zambia’s diverse heritage.

In a statement issued by State House Chief Communications Specialist Mr. Clayson Hamasaka, President Hichilema said the nation had received the news of the Paramount Chief’s death with deep sadness.

The President paid tribute to Paramount Chief Mpezeni IV for his distinguished leadership and dedication to preserving the cultural identity and traditions of the Ngoni people while promoting national unity.

“His Majesty was a revered custodian of Ngoni culture and heritage, and a unifying symbol of Zambia’s rich cultural diversity. His distinguished service and leadership will remain an enduring part of our national heritage,” President Hichilema said.

The Head of State noted that the loss of the Paramount Chief extends beyond the Ngoni Royal Establishment and Eastern Province, describing it as a national tragedy that has deprived the country of a respected traditional leader and patriot.

President Hichilema said the nation stands in solidarity with the Ngoni Royal Establishment, the bereaved family and the entire Ngoni-speaking community during the period of mourning.

“As we mourn this great loss, the nation stands united with the Ngoni Royal Establishment, the bereaved family, and the entire Ngoni people,” he said.

The President further conveyed his heartfelt condolences to all those affected by the death of the traditional leader and prayed for strength and comfort during the difficult period.

State House Chief Communications Specialist Mr. Clayson Hamasaka said the President joins the nation in mourning the passing of the revered traditional leader, whose contribution to cultural preservation, unity and national development will be remembered for generations.

Paramount Chief Mpezeni IV, the Ngwenyama of the Ngoni people of Eastern Province, passed away on May 30, 2026. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the Ngoni Royal Establishment after the completion of traditional consultations and protocols.

“May His Majesty Paramount Chief Mpezeni IV rest in eternal peace,” President Hichilema added.

GOVERNMENT MOURNS PARAMOUNT CHIEF MPEZENI, DESCRIBES DEATH AS NATIONAL LOSS

The Government has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Paramount Chief Mpezeni, describing his passing as a significant loss to the nation and the Ngoni Royal Establishment.

In a statement issued in Chipata, Eastern Province, Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Mr. Thabo Kawana said Government had received with profound sadness the news of the passing of the revered traditional leader.

Mr. Kawana said the death of Paramount Chief Mpezeni is a great loss not only to the Ngoni people and the people of Eastern Province, but also to the entire country.

He noted that Chief Mpezeni was a respected traditional leader whose dedication to preserving culture and tradition, while promoting peace and development, earned him admiration across Zambia.

“Chief Mpezeni was a respected traditional leader whose contribution to the preservation of culture, tradition, peace and development will be remembered for generations,” Mr. Kawana said.

The Permanent Secretary conveyed Government’s heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family, the immediate family, the Ngoni people, the people of Eastern Province and all Zambians mourning the loss of the traditional leader.

Mr. Kawana further assured the nation that Government would continue engaging the Royal Establishment during the mourning period as the necessary traditional and administrative protocols are undertaken.

He said Government remains committed to supporting the Royal Establishment as arrangements are put in place to honour the late Paramount Chief.

Paramount Chief Mpezeni, regarded as one of Zambia’s most influential traditional leaders, leaves behind a legacy of cultural preservation, unity and service to his people. Further details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be announced following consultations by the Royal Establishment.

KING MPEZENI IV DIES, SENIOR CHIEF NZAMANE ANNOUNCES

Senior Chief Nzamane of the Ngoni-speaking people in Eastern Province has announced the death of His Majesty King Mpezeni IV, the Paramount Chief of the Ngoni people.

Speaking during a press briefing in Chipata, His Royal Highness Nkosi Nzamane IV said the Ngoni Kingdom had lost its revered traditional leader, who passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2026.

Senior Chief Nzamane described the death of King Mpezeni IV as a great loss to the Ngoni people and the nation at large.

“The Ngwenyama left us today, 30th May, 2026,” he announced during the briefing.

He said details regarding the funeral programme and burial arrangements would be communicated to the public once all traditional protocols and consultations within the royal establishment had been concluded.

Senior Chief Nzamane has since appealed for calm and unity among the Ngoni people as the kingdom mourns the passing of its monarch.

King Mpezeni IV was the Paramount Chief of the Ngoni people of Eastern Province and played a significant role in preserving the cultural heritage and traditions of the Ngoni Kingdom.

Further details surrounding the funeral process are expected to be announced in due course.
