Aunty Mapalo Learning Center was established to provide quality early childhood development education to the underprivileged and vulnerable children in rur
After relocating in 2016 to Kanakatapa resettlement scheme for farming purposes as a young mother l soon discovered that my two little boys could not continue their preschool as there was no facility available offering early childhood development education in the area. Faced with such a dilemma l decided to begin a home schooling program preparing my boys for primary school, in order to stimulate
them we invited a few local kids they had made friends with to attend the 2hrs daily class with them. The children were very thrilled at the prospect of attending school for the first time and the following day instead of two l received four little ones wanting to learn. The home schooling program was focused on numeracy and literacy, being passionate on seeing my little ones ready with reading and writing skills for success in primary school was a driving force to keep the program going. Three months later the small room in my house we were using for lessons now welcomed 15 children from the community each day of the week. After much research and interaction with the community l soon learnt that children in this area were entering school later than usual (9 yrs for grade 1) and also this would be the first time the child is getting exposed to school education. The closest school in the area require a 2hrs walk which is near impossible for the little malnourished children in the area thus Aunty Mapalo Learning Center was born, my desire is to have these children receive quality education regardless of their background. In line with the Unicef and Ministry of Education goal to have Early Childhood Development education programs available to children before entering primary school (grade 1), the Centre’s is focused on providing ECD classes based on the current national school curriculum. This program will have the following subdivisions
Level 1 – catering for children ages 3 – 5 years, gender-responsive, and age-appropriate stimulation and learning opportunities.
Level 2 – catering for 6 – 7yrs age groups which are the primary target for school preparedness, through cognitive, self-help, and socialization skills development.
Level 3 – catering for children ages 8 – 10yrs, this is a support class for children in lower primary offering numeracy and literacy classes. Thank you for taking the time to read this, there are some really amazing little people who would appreciate your assistance for the success and continuation of this project.
