🩺 FROM A NURSING STUDENT TO A QUALIFIED NURSE — THE PART OF SUCCESS YOU DON'T SEE
Two pictures. Two moments. One journey.
The first picture takes me back to my days as a nursing student, after clearing my hospital final mock examinations. My bibs were full, but behind those bars was a story of hard work, pressure, clinical challenges, sleepless nights, mistakes, corrections, and the determination to keep moving forward.
The second picture was taken after clearing my NMCZ competency examinations, now standing in white as a qualified nurse. 🩺🤍
Looking at these two pictures reminds me of the Iceberg Theory of Success.
An iceberg is often used to explain that what we see on the surface is only a small part of the whole. About 10% is visible above the water, while roughly 90% remains hidden beneath the surface.
People see the 10% — the qualification, the uniform, the certificate, the celebrations, the title "Nurse," and the success.
But they don't see the 90% underneath.
They don't see the long nights of studying.
They don't see the sacrifices.
They don't see the difficult examinations.
They don't see the moments of self-doubt.
They don't see the clinical challenges.
They don't see the mistakes, failures and lessons.
They don't see the discipline, patience, resilience and determination required to keep going.
That 90% is the foundation.
Just like an iceberg, the visible part of your success can only stand because of what has been built beneath the surface.
So, to every nursing student, build your foundation.
Study when nobody is watching.
Practise when nobody is applauding.
Learn from your mistakes.
Develop discipline.
Build your confidence.
Stay committed when things become difficult.
Choose resilience when giving up seems easier.
Don't focus only on becoming the visible 10%. Work on the hidden 90%.
Because one day, the foundation you are building quietly will support the success that everyone can see.
When people eventually see you in that white uniform, they may see a qualified nurse.
But you will know the story beneath it.
You will know the nights.
You will know the sacrifices.
You will know the tears.
You will know the battles.
You will know how many times you wanted to give up but chose to continue.
Today, when I look at these two pictures, I don't just see a student and a qualified nurse.
I see the iceberg. I see the foundation. I see the journey.
And if there is one message I want every nursing student to take from this:
Build the 90% that nobody sees, so that one day the 10% that everybody sees will speak for itself.
Your current struggle is not the end of your story. Stay focused. Stay resilient. Keep building. Keep going. Your white uniform is waiting for you. 🩺❤️
From a student preparing for the journey… to a qualified nurse who made it through.
