The first time ever backing up a horse, at just 22 months old.

We often think of pressure as something forceful. But biologically, pressure doesn’t teach the horse anything—it just motivates them to search for an answer. The release is what actually teaches.

In fact, science shows us that the ideal rein signal is tiny: around 4 Newtons of pressure, which is roughly the weight of a small apple. Under 5 Newtons a side is a conversation. Anything over 10 Newtons, and the horse is just trying to escape by force.

If you have to pull hard, the answer isn’t more strength. It’s a smaller question, and a faster release. You only have a 1-to-2-second window to release when your horse “tries.” Master that window, and lightness follows.
