Faith Fridays – 31 July 2026

Message by Dr Mark Blew

Each term is filled with so many activities around school: lessons in classrooms, fixtures to be played on the sports fields and social time to connect with friends. But within the busyness, there are moments where we can take a breath and restore our souls by spending time with God. Time in His Word, time in prayer, and time just enjoying what He has given us. This restores us, gives us hope and adds purpose to all that we do. Let's find those moments as we head into Term 3.

More than Boarding…It’s a way of life!

There's something special about coming home to a space that feels calm, comfortable and welcoming. Our recently upgraded Uplands Preparatory Boarding Houses have been thoughtfully refreshed with soft, neutral colours, spacious dormitories, cosy sleep zones and charming décor to create a true home away from home for our boarders from Grade 4 to Grade 7.

Designed to inspire a sense of belonging, comfort and independence, these beautiful spaces provide the perfect environment for our pupils to rest, learn, grow and build lifelong friendships. At Uplands, boarding is more than accommodation - it's a place where children feel at home.

Uplands College: Mandela Day - Building Educational Resources for a Brighter Future

At Uplands, we are privileged to have educational resources freely available. Mandela Day reminds us that many schools are not as fortunate, and that we can make a difference. This year, our focus is once again on creating educational learning resources for children in schools where such materials are rare treasures.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” - Nelson Mandela

Sessions like these are valuable beyond measure. They teach our pupils the importance of service, creativity and empathy. By designing resources that strengthen learning skills, our children discover how education can be shared, built and celebrated.

Through participation, they learn:
Collaboration: working together to solve problems.
Creativity: turning simple materials into powerful learning tools.
Empathy: understanding the needs of children in less resourced schools.
Service: giving time and effort to uplift others.

These activities not only benefit the schools we support, but also shape our own pupils into compassionate, thoughtful leaders of tomorrow.

Honouring Madiba Through Acts of Kindness

Although Mandela Day fell during the school holidays, we were excited to celebrate it together during our first week back. It was the perfect opportunity to teach our Uplands Preparatory pupils about the spirit of Nelson Mandela - that through kindness, compassion and service, each of us has the power to make a difference.

Every grade embraced the day in their own special way:

Grade 7 treated our staff to a car wash.

Grade 6 baked cookies to share with security guards, car guards and members of the White River community.

Grade 5 made heartfelt cards before delivering gifts to the Coolmore Farm office.

Grade 4 baked and packaged muffins to share with the residents of Rustig Retirement Village.

Grade 3 collected food for the SPCA, while Grade 2 made toys for our four-legged friends.

Grade 1 collected books for Millennium Home of Hope to help inspire a love of reading.

It was a morning filled with generosity, smiles and teamwork, reminding us that Madiba's legacy lives on through simple acts of kindness. We are so proud of our pupils for embracing the true spirit of Mandela Day and showing that everyone has the ability to make a positive impact.

Celebrating Mandela Day Through Kindness

Although Mandela Day fell during the school holidays, our “Little Uplanders” celebrated on Friday, 24 July, discovering that kindness is something we can practise every day. As they learned about Nelson Mandela and his legacy, the children baked biscuits, made sandwiches and decorated cupcakes to share with others. Some delivered their gifts to the wonderful staff members who work behind the scenes at school, while others took them home to brighten the day of someone in their own community.

Through conversations about kindness and helping hands, and by filling our Kindness Jar one pom-pom at a time, our “Little Uplanders” were reminded that even the smallest acts of care can make a meaningful difference. A beautiful reminder that no one is ever too young to make the world a little kinder.
