Humanitarian NPO Co-Founder of Clowns without Borders SouthAfrica, Ms Lindokuhle ‘Lulu’ Ngcobo graduated with a Master of Commerce in Management.
Ngcobo balanced her postgraduate studies with her grass-roots humanitarian work as head of the artist-led humanitarian organisation which is dedicated to improving the psychosocial well-being of children and communities affected by crisis.

Ngcobo’s thesis, titled ‘Effectiveness of Capacity-Building Initiatives: A Case Study of Clowns Without Borders South Africa,’ was supervised by Dr Vangeli Gamede and Professor Matthew Kimanzi. The study - which was done during the COVID-19 pandemic and amid major funding cuts which included USAID/PEPFAR - explored how effectively the organisation equips partner institutions to implement and scale evidence-based positive-parenting programmes.

Over the past 12 years, the graduate says she has guided Clowns Without Borders South Africa through exponential growth. She says she brings extensive experience in international cross-border operations and has collaborated with academics, donors, other non-profit-organisations, and government teams to deliver pioneering, evidence-based programmes designed for global scale.

“Compared with the public and private sectors, non-profit organisations are sometimes viewed as informal structures addressing small-scale problems - I am committed to challenging that perception. An NPO can be professionally managed, strategically ambitious, and capable of lasting impact at scale. Our organisation has strengthened the capacity of trainers and implementers in more than 23 countries across Africa and beyond, demonstrating that sound business practice with quality programme offering can sustain and expand social-development programmes,” she said.

For Ngcobo, combining her academic achievements with hands-on practice marks a vital step forward for both her leadership and her broader policy goals.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) District Court prosecutor Smiso Khanyase graduated with a Master of Business Administration (MBA).
Khanyase’s firsthand experience in South Africa’s criminal justice system inspired Khanyase to research how technology can boost court efficiencies and broaden access to justice.
His research titled, Enhancing the Use of Technology in the Prosecution of Cases at the National Prosecuting Authority," was supervised by Dr Xoliswa Majola.
The study found that technology alone is rarely the solution as successful digital transformation depends on a broader ecosystem that includes reliable connectivity, adequate infrastructure, user training, organisational support and effective change management.
“Without these elements, even well-designed technological solutions may fail to deliver their intended benefits. The topic was particularly meaningful because it stemmed from my own experience working within the criminal justice sector. My hope is that my research will contribute to a more practical and realistic understanding of digital transformation, particularly in the public sector where implementation challenges are often underestimate,” said Khanyase.

Award winning author, lawyer and digital Content Creator Xolo Songca graduated with a Master of Laws (LLM) in Constitutional Theory, Law and Litigation.
Songca, who is widely recognised for his debut political non-fiction book The African Code, actively interacts with audiences on social media platforms such as TikTok and X where he shares his opinion on legal issues, education, and societal values.
Driven by a desire to strengthen South African law and constitutional governance, Songca’s master’s research addresses critical systemic challenges within local government.
“I believe the most significant societal impact of my research is it moves the discussion about municipal dysfunction beyond statistics and government reports and towards the lived experiences of communities.”
Supervised by Professor Warren Freedman, Songca’s study, Examining the rising number of municipalities under Section 139 interventions in KwaZulu-Natal: A determination of municipal dysfunctionality and dissolution in terms of Section 139(5) of the Constitution, investigates the laws that allow the provincial government to intervene in the affairs of a dysfunctional municipality.
“I was driven by my desire to understand why so many municipalities struggle to fulfil their constitutional responsibilities. I found that municipal dysfunctionality is rarely caused by one issue, but is often the result of political instability, poor financial management, weak leadership, inadequate institutional capacity and a lack of accountability,” said Songca.
For Songca, earning his LLM from UKZN marks a milestone in a personal journey intertwined with institutional history. Having previously earned his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at the University, he also shares a familial link to UKZN as his uncle, Professor Sandile Songca, was the former Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning.
” I come from a family of deeply intellectual and accomplished scholars and professionals. I have authored and published two award-winning books. My family, especially my parents are very excited. I was with my wife when I first heard the news and she is ecstatic especially because she has witnessed the hard work and sacrifices, we both put into this.”

At the recent UKZN Graduate School of Business and Leadership’s Power Connect Business Breakfast, trailblazers in the field of Local Economic Development(LED) gathered under the theme Imbokodo: Women in Local Economic Development (LED). Facilitated by Dr Xoliswa Majola, a Senior Lecturer at UKZN’s School of Commerce, an exceptional panel of changemakers came together to not only celebrate women in LED but to also drive actionable discourse on the future of LED:
The panel comprised of Judy Stuart (Future Farmers Foundation), Bongiwe Nyawo (Nyawo Zendalo Air), Lana Meyer (Acting Chief Executive Officer: KZN Growth Fund Agency) and Seshnee Govender (Founder and Director: Seshnee Govender and Associates).

The University of KwaZulu-Natal’s College of Law and Management Studies (CLMS) recently welcomed prospective students, alumni, professionals and industry stakeholders to its Postgraduate Open Days in Pietermaritzburg and Durban.

The events showcased the College’s diverse postgraduate offerings across the School of Law, the School of Commerce, the Graduate School of Business and Leadership, and Executive Education programmes, highlighting UKZN’s commitment to research excellence, innovation and lifelong learning.

Guests were encouraged to view postgraduate study as more than an academic pursuit, but as an investment in their future and an opportunity to become creators of knowledge capable of addressing complex local and global challenges through impactful research and leadership.

The programme featured inspiring addresses from College Dean of Research and Higher Degrees, Professor Phocenah Nyatanga, who emphasised the transformative power of research in improving lives, informing policy and driving sustainable development, alongside keynote speakers Mr Sizwe Cele and Dr Zeph Nhleko, who shared their personal journeys and reinforced the value of continuous learning in shaping ethical leaders and strengthening South Africa’s future.

The Open Days concluded with interactive networking sessions, allowing attendees to engage directly with academics, explore research opportunities and identify postgraduate qualifications aligned with their career aspirations.
