*In Memory of Kaicho Hatsuo Royama*

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Kaicho Hatsuo Royama, who left us in the early hours of this morning.

Kaicho Royama’s life was karate. As one of Mas Oyama’s earliest students, training at the legendary Oyama Dojo from his teenage years, he stood at the very birth of Kyokushin Karate and remained one of the few to walk that path from its beginning all the way through Sosai’s passing — and for decades beyond. He carried that lineage forward not as a custodian of the past, but as a builder of the future, founding Kyokushin-kan to keep true Budo Karate alive for generations who would never meet Sosai Oyama themselves.

I had the privilege of joining Kyokushin-kan in 2003 as one of his first branch chiefs. From that very early stage, Kaicho Royama’s influence on me — and on so many instructors around the world — was profound. His dedication was total, his zest for life infectious, and his knowledge of the martial arts seemed boundless.

His impact reached far beyond Japan. Kyokushin Karate in Africa, and across the world, bears his fingerprints — in the dojos he inspired, the instructors he shaped, and the countless karateka whose character and discipline trace back, directly or indirectly, to his teaching.

Kaicho Royama will be deeply missed by karateka everywhere. His legacy will continue in every dojo that carries forward the spirit he embodied: discipline, sincerity, and an unshakeable love for the Way.

Osu, Kaicho. Thank you for everything you gave us.

Kyokushin Budokan Gashuku 2026

What a fantastic weekend of training, learning, and friendship at our annual Kyokushin Budokan Gashuku.

A sincere thank you to our visiting Japanese instructors, Sensei Toshihide and Sensei Ryo, for sharing their knowledge, experience, and spirit with all of us. Your instruction and guidance were greatly appreciated and made this year's camp a truly memorable experience.

We would also like to thank Shihan Hennie Bosman for his leadership and commitment in bringing together another successful and inspiring Gashuku.
A special highlight of the weekend was celebrating Hanshi's 70th birthday. It was a wonderful opportunity for students and instructors to honour his lifelong dedication to Kyokushin and the impact he has had on so many karateka over the years.

The camp concluded with a grading on the final day, where candidates displayed strong technique, determination, and excellent fighting spirit. Congratulations to everyone who stepped onto the floor and gave their best effort.

Thank you to all the instructors, students, families, and supporters who contributed to an unforgettable weekend. The spirit of Kyokushin was evident throughout, and we look forward to many more opportunities to train together.
