“Denise , in my native tongue, I’m confident, articulate, and even a bit witty. But when I switch to English, that confidence often takes a nosedive, leaving me feeling a bit 'stupid.'’ This is what so many of my clients tell me.
Here's what I've done to feel less “stupid” - I try to remember that I’m not really stupid; I’m just learning. And that's something to be proud of, not something to feel stupid about.
So, let's dive into some practical tips for navigating English with confidence:
1. Speak slowly. Many of us tend to race through sentences. But in English, take your time. Slow down, gather your
thoughts, and watch as your clarity improves.
2. Find your phrases. Instead of getting lost in a sea of vocabulary, you can just focus on phrases that resonate with you. Your unique perspective and the phrases you choose will make English feel more like your own, adding richness to your conversations.
3. Listen up. Remember, listening is just as crucial as speaking. Don’t fall into the trap of preparing an answer to
the question you think you're being asked. Take a moment, listen intently, and respond thoughtfully.
I hope these tips resonate with you as they have with me. Remember, it’s not about perfection—it’s about progress. Keep learning, keep growing, and above all, keep speaking.
Wishing you all the confidence in the world.
