Some children walk into your classroom quietly.

Others walk in... and immediately send your blood pressure sky-high. 😅

Ayaan was definitely the second one.

The little boy who opened my Grade R class arrived with so much fire in his heart—angry, scared, stubborn, and determined to do everything his own way. There were days I wondered if we'd ever get through to each other.

But then, little by little, something beautiful happened.

The walls came down.
Trust grew.
The frowns became smiles.
The little boy who tested every ounce of my patience slowly became one of the little boys who stole a piece of my heart.

Behind every remarkable child is someone fighting battles with them. His incredible mum never gave up. Her patience, love and strength helped shape the confident young boy he is today, and it has been such a privilege to witness that journey.

Tomorrow, Ayaan leaves for India to represent South Africa.

What an incredible achievement.

It's funny how the children who challenge us the most often leave the biggest footprints on our hearts.

Fly high, Ayaan. 🇿🇦✈️🇮🇳

Your Grade R teacher will always remember the little boy who made her question her life choices before 8 a.m... and then made her incredibly proud.

I’ve always called my students my children — because that’s truly what they become to me.
Yesterday, as I took them for their entrance exams, an educator asked what I was doing at the school.
Without a thought, I answered, “I brought my children for their entrance exams.”
She smiled and said, “Oh, so you’re bringing your boys back?”

And in that moment, it struck me — how deeply my heart has been woven into theirs.
These little souls, once shy and uncertain, now walking bravely toward their next chapter.

Take my gorgeous girl here — four beautiful years we’ve shared.
Four years of laughter, learning, and love.
Now I find myself counting down the days to big school,
feeling both proud and tearful,
watching her step into a world that awaits her with open arms.

They arrive as children in my care,
but they leave carrying a piece of my heart. ❣️
