🥋 JKS Union Of South Africa Nationals – What a weekend!
Stepping onto the National stage for the first time takes courage. Walking away with national titles and podium finishes shows what happens when preparation meets relentless passion.
*The Heart of a Warrior*
Just being on that tatami is a massive milestone. At this level, the margins are razor-thin. If you didn’t place this time, it’s not a reflection of your worth or ability - it just means someone had a fraction more speed or a split-second edge on the day.
The real champion is made in the courage to step up, face the pressure, and hold your head high. We are profoundly proud of every student who conquered their nerves and represented our dojo with honor. You didn’t just participate - you grew.
*The Ultimate Family Bond*
Beyond the medals, the highlight was seeing the family bond in our dojo. Hendrik & Klarabel Botha, and Jan & Petro Scheepers - two fathers and two daughters sharing the National tatami, pushing each other, and winning together. This is more than sport. It’s a legacy built on love, respect, and grit.
To every parent, supporter, and karateka: you made history for our dojo. Your hard work is our greatest reward.
Massive congratulations to every single one of you! 👏

More than just a sport – it’s a family! 🥋🍦
We had an absolute blast in Vaalpark this past Saturday! Training with Murakami Shihan from Japan was an incredible experience. The technical wisdom and energy he shared with us were world-class, and we’ve all walked away with so much more knowledge.
But at our dojo, it’s about more than just the moves on the mat—it’s about the people. The team spirit was at an all-time high, and there was no better way to wrap up a hard day’s training than heading to Spur Steak Ranches for some well-deserved milkshakes and great company! 🍔✨
A massive thank you to Sensei James Vermaak for hosting Murakami Shihan and for the wonderful hospitality. We are so grateful for the opportunity to have been part of this session.
So proud of our team’s spirit and dedication. Onwards and upwards!

We are proud to announce that our students from Vaal Karate & Fitness successfully passed their grading held on the 11th of March 2026. Their hard work, dedication and discipline have truly paid off, and we are immensely proud of their progress.
As part of JKS Union South Africa, our governing body with Japanese affiliation, we strive for the highest standards, and our students certainly met them.
To those students who weren't quite ready to grade this time, keep training hard and stay focused - your time will come and we look forward to seeing your progress in the next session.
A sincere thank you to the parents for your ongoing support and for standing by these athletes throughout their journey in the sport.
We also want to extend our gratitude to Sensei Hein Engelbrecht for overseeing the grading and his guidance and insight. Despite traveling all the way from Centurion, he was the last to leave, taking the time to talk with both parents and students. His encouragement and guidance left everyone feeling motivated - a true inspiration to our karatekas.
Thank you to Mari Laufs for producing images that highlight the success and significance of the grading.
Finally, a big thank you to Klipriver Country Estate for once again gone out of their way to ensure our events and gradings are a success.
Well done to everyone!

🌟 Vaal Karate & Fitness – Gasshuku Weekend in Pretoria 🌟
This past weekend our students took part in the first Gasshuku of the new JKS Union in Pretoria, and what an unforgettable experience it was!
A group of students traveled together with a Volkswagen Microbus, kindly made available by Gerhard van Heerden, with Hendrik Botha ensuring everyone’s safe journey there and back. The atmosphere in the vehicle was incredible – full of laughter, motivation, and team spirit. The rest of our students met up in Pretoria, ready to train hard and embrace the challenge.
The Gasshuku was more than just training – it was about growth, discipline, and unity. Our students showed commitment, resilience, and passion, and the turnout from Vaal Karate & Fitness was something to be truly proud of.
đź’Ş Our dojo family is close-knit, our team spirit is unmatched, and the support from parents makes us stronger every step of the way. Together, we rise, and we never step back.
A heartfelt thank you to Mari Laufs, both parent and student at Vaal Karate, for her dedication and the beautiful photos that captured the spirit of the day. We also extend our gratitude to the organizers, senior leaders, and all instructors who worked tirelessly to make this event possible. Their effort and vision turned the Gasshuku into a remarkable and successful day that will be remembered.
This weekend reminded us that karate is not only about perfecting technique, but also about building character, friendships, and strength of spirit. With JKS Union South Africa, we look forward to many more opportunities to grow and shine.

🥋 Small Team, Big Heart at the Eagles Tournament! 🦅
Yesterday, our Dojo was represented by a small but dedicated team at the Eagles Tournament in Pretoria. With nearly 900 entries, the level of competition was tuff, and we are so proud of our students for stepping onto such a high-pressure stage!
Janco Janse van Rensburg earned a Silver Medal for Kata with a focused and precise performance. He also put up a fantastic fight in Kumite—a real "close call" and missed a medal here, but showing great tactical growth. Well done, Janco!
Shenique showed true "Budo" spirit by competing in a very tough field. In karate, the greatest victory is the courage it takes to test yourself against the best. While yesterday wasn't about the podium, the experience gained is invaluable. We are proud of your dedication and your heart on the mat! 🛡️
The Path to Mastery: Next Stop, Gasshuku! ⛩️
The journey of a karateka never stops at a tournament. Next week, our students have the incredible, privilege of attending a Gasshuku Masterclassess.
This is a "fantasy" opportunity to train with Senior 8th Dan Masters! It is an inspiring environment where our students will rub shoulders with the elite and learn from the very best. To be part of a Masterclass of this caliber is a massive honor and a rare advantage for any student’s development.
📅 Prep Starts Now!
To make the most of this elite opportunity, we urge all students to attend classes this week. We’ll be sharpening our basics and preparing our mindset to train with the Masters.
Let's turn Saturday’s lessons into tomorrow’s strengths! See you at the Dojo . Oss! 👊

With a full heart and immense pride, we celebrate Christopher Small’s incredible achievement: his Shodan karate grading!
I’m deeply moved and incredibly proud to congratulate Christopher Small on achieving his Shodan karate grading this past weekend.
While our dojo has produced several black belts over the years, Christopher’s achievement holds a truly special place in our hearts. He was the very first student to enroll back in 2016 when the dojo was founded. Starting out as a shy and reserved young boy, he began his karate journey with quiet determination—and over the years, he has earned numerous accolades, including Sedibeng colours and Gauteng championship medals.
During high school, he balanced both rugby and karate, eventually choosing to focus on rugby. Even there, he shone: selected to play for the Valke, his team became Valke Champions two years in a row, and runners-up in the Noordvaal tournament. Later, he returned to karate with renewed focus and trained with unwavering dedication. Last year, Overvaal High School awarded him honorary colors for Academics and Sport—a reflection of his discipline, balance, and commitment to excellence.
But beyond the medals and achievements, what truly sets Christopher apart is his character. He is a young man of deep respect, treating everyone—young and old—with kindness and humility. At such a young age, he has become a role model for the younger students in the dojo. His discipline, integrity, and quiet leadership speak louder than words.
Christopher embodies everything karate stands for: hard work, commitment, determination, humility, and above all—respect. He has grown from a timid little boy into a remarkable young man we admire deeply.
We sincerely congratulate him on his Shodan grading and believe this is only the beginning of an extraordinary journey. 🌟
