After being in The Northern Transvaal Team now called Tshwane, to represent our province at the first SA Junior Championships which was held in 1970 or 1971 it is a proud moment to be selected again for “Tshwane”. I remember clearly the morning we arrived in Durban dressed in my school uniform for the march on at the SA Championships and seeing the sea for my very first time. We stopped at the beach right in front of the venue and all I wanted to do was just feel and experience the sea water. To my mothers bitter surprise I didn’t keep to just walking on the edge of the water but wanted to go just a little bit further and deeper. With her and my fathers distressed calls I was caught by a higher wave and half my school uniform was soaked with water. My first experience of the sea changed into a frantic race to dry my uniform in time for the march on. Today I smile about the incident and although my parents were highly irritated with me we made it in time to proudly march with the rest of SA in our immaculate school uniforms. My sporting career in karate kicked off that day and I have to acknowledge and thank the following Karate role models that played a pivotal role in forming me to achieve my destiny. My father Chris, Eddie Dorey Shihan, Stan Schmidt Shihan, Malcolm Dorfman Shihan and Norman Robinson Shihan who is now my Sensei and still developing me. I salute you all. Oss.
