3 things I wish I knew before joining my first yacht 👇

When I started in yachting in 2005, there was a lot I had to learn along the way. These are still three of the biggest things I tell new crew today:

⚓ Choose recognised training.
Not every certificate carries the same weight. Check who your training provider is accredited by, and for STCW, make sure the training is issued through an approved administration/provider recognised under the IMO framework.

⚓ Your attitude matters.
You do not need to know everything on day one, but you do need to be willing to learn, take feedback, work hard and be reliable.

⚓ Your reputation matters from day one.
Yachting is a small industry. Captains, Chief Stews, Pursers and crew move between yachts — and people talk.

Do your research. Choose your training carefully. Start your career properly.

When the mid-season tiredness hits and getting out of bed suddenly feels like a full-body operation. 😂

Long days, busy turnarounds, early starts… yachties, we see you.

If you’re currently running on coffee, teamwork and pure determination — you’re doing better than you think. Keep going. 💪⚓️

A little RYA fun on the water! 🌊⚓

Our students have been getting hands-on with practical boat handling, building confidence, learning new skills and enjoying plenty of time out on the water along the way.

Because training can be serious without being boring!
