Nateshwar Dance Academy South African Indian Dance Academy celebrating 44 Years of Dance in Kathak, Folk & Bollywood Dance. The Academy was founded in 1980 by Mrs.

The Nateshwar Dance Academy specialises in the North Indian classical form of dance known as Kathak as well as in various folk dances of India. Furthermore, the academy provides lessons in the popular moern dance forms showcased through Bollywood cinema and other modern forms of dance. ce. It was especially popular for local competitions and eistedfods. Over time, the Academy grew into a well known local centre and drew pupils from across the province to its classes. Under the guidance of Mrs. Smeetha Maharaj, the Academy branched out even further and graduated a number of talented dancers from 1995 onwards. These pupils became the next generation of teachers and formed a strong part of the legacy at Nateshwar. Classes are now held at a number of locations in Kwa-Zulu Natal and range from students of age 5 and upwards to any age.

POSTCARDS FROM VARANASI

Known through the ages as Kashi, the City of Light, and Banaras, Varanasi has inspired centuries of music, poetry and devotion. Along the sacred Ganga, the Benares Gharana emerged, shaping one of Kathak’s most celebrated traditions through expressive abhinaya, intricate rhythm and timeless storytelling.

This collection explores nine enduring symbols of the Benares Gharana: the Peacock, Lotus, Jasmine Garland, Bansuri, Ghungroo, Tabla, Matki, Diya and Jhoola. Each carries its own story, reflecting the rhythm, grace, devotion and artistry that continue to define the visual language of Kathak.

Together, these symbols offer a glimpse into a living tradition where everyday objects become vessels of meaning, preserving centuries of culture through dance.

At Nateshwar Dance Academy, the Benares Gharana lies at the heart of our Kathak syllabus, where its stories, traditions and symbolism continue to inspire every generation of dancers.
