I get a variety of reports and articles that come across my desk on a daily basis, but one in particular on character building caught my eye most recently. Coaches and administrators often say that Soccer build character and offer life lessons to players, but is that really true? Can kicking a soccer ball or running around a track really instill good morals and values in today’s generation? Personally, I think that it can and after reading the article from Character in Sports, I’m convinced even more so that sports in fact can build character if managed properly.....

If you are in a leadership position, please don't compromise on deliverables! Always remember that the reason why you are upset about things that are not working in your municipality, city, country or organisation is precisely because someone who had or has the responsibility to make them happen chose to be nice so that they can be liked, rather than hold people accountable.

Do the right thing! Lead by example and deliver quality work then hold those who report to you accountable to deliver on their responsibilities, no matter how close you are to them. Of course most people don't like it; some may call you names or say you are difficult. Remain focused and don't take their bad comments personally - be free spirited and keep demanding delivery!

It's about time we end mediocrity! You can make a difference in whatever position you occupy - we can and should normalise excellence!!
