DUT is proudly represented by two researchers from the Department of Horticulture, Dr Bonga Ngcobo and Dr Sbulelo Mwelase, at the 32nd International Horticultural Congress (IHC2026), currently underway in Kyoto, Japan.

Recognised as the worldโ€™s largest international scientific gathering dedicated to horticulture, IHC2026 brings together leading researchers, academics, industry experts and professionals from across the globe to exchange knowledge, showcase research and advance the future of horticultural science.

Held under the theme โ€œThe Diversity of Horticulture,โ€ the 2026 Congress explores the breadth of contemporary horticultural science, from sustainable agricultural practices and plant production to emerging technologies in robotics, genetics and innovative production systems.

Representing the Faculty of Applied Sciences, DUT researchers are contributing to this global scientific dialogue through research focused on the valorisation of waste for sustainable soilless production and quality preservation of fresh produce.

Their participation reflects the Facultyโ€™s commitment to producing research that responds to global challenges while strengthening international collaboration and knowledge exchange.

From Durban to Kyoto, FAS continues to advance science, strengthen global connections and contribute to a more sustainable future for plant science and food security. ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒ

WHEN WOMEN GATHER, STORIES ARE SHARED

The Faculty of Applied Sciences marked Womenโ€™s Month with a memorable Sisterhood High Tea at Rendezvous, bringing women together to connect, celebrate and inspire one another.

Programme directed by Ms Londiwe Mkhungo and hosted by Executive Dean Prof Suren Singh, with the support of Deputy Dean Prof Tukayi Kudanga, the afternoon featured an inspiring keynote by Ms Mendy Zibuyile Shozi, Project Manager at BORDA South Africa, who spoke on Women in STEM: Leading, Inspiring & Creating Impact.

Guests also enjoyed โ€œBeauty Is Therapyโ€, a conversation led by Ms Lasandra Majola, Entrepreneur, Makeup Artist and Founder of LayLayHairbyLasandra & Makeup, focusing on beauty, self-care, confidence and wellness.

The celebration also included surprise prizes from Fancy Claws Salon, adding a little excitement to an afternoon centred on connection and sisterhood.

From DUT graduate to champion of the green industry.

Meet Kate Johnson, a 1996 Diploma in Horticulture graduate from Durban Technikon, now the Durban University of Technology.

Nearly three decades later, Kate continues to make her mark in horticulture and landscaping. Her career has taken her from nursery production and the seed industry to 16 years in landscaping, and today, to her role as Operations Manager at the South African Landscapers Institute KwaZulu Natal (SALI KZN).

But her story goes beyond career progression.

Through SALI KZN, Kate has helped strengthen the partnership between industry and DUT, creating opportunities for our students to gain practical industry exposure, attend professional events, access training and connect with professionals in the field.

SALI also supports DUT through bursaries, community initiatives, advisory board participation and ongoing industry collaboration.

For Kate, it is about helping students bridge the gap between the classroom and the workplace, while encouraging the next generation to see the possibilities within the green industry.

As a mother, wife, industry professional and proud DUT alumna, Kateโ€™s journey is a reminder that the impact of education can extend far beyond graduation.

She graduated from DUT. She built a career. And today, she is helping others find their way into the industry.

This Womenโ€™s Month, we celebrate Kate Johnson and the women who continue to grow industries, nurture talent and create opportunities for those who come after them.

๐Ÿ”ฌโœจ Inspiring the next generation of scientists!

The Faculty of Applied Sciences joined the DUT Science Show 2026 at Port Shepstone High School on 6 August, hosted by DUTโ€™s Student Recruitment Office in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education.

Our students and academics brought STEM to life through interactive experiences. โš“๐Ÿงชโž—

Naledi Maphumulo, third-year Maritime Studies student, shared her journey as a student leader and introduced learners to careers in the shipping and maritime industry.

Slungile Makhathini, Masterโ€™s Chemistry student, wowed learners with an elephant toothpaste demonstration, chemistry activities and quizzes, while the Mathematics Department challenged learners with engaging mathematical activities led by Professor Meagan and Professor Deonarain Brijlall.

Our Faculty Marketing Team also connected with learners, showcasing Applied Sciences programmes and career opportunities while assisting prospective students with CAO applications.

๐Ÿ“ธ When global minds meet, knowledge expands.

The Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Applied Sciences at DUT, proudly welcomed distinguished international scholar Professor Abhay Saxena, Dean of the School of Technology, Management and Communication and Head of the Department of Computer Science at Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya, India, for an engaging lecture on Quantum Science, Frontier Technologies and Human Consciousness.

Hosted by Professor Deonarain Brijlall, the event brought together Professor Darren Lortan (Head of the Department of Mathematics), Dr Anisha Ananth (Head of the Department of Statistics), Professor Aneshkumar Maharaj from the School of Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics at UKZN, alongside other academics, researchers and students, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and global collaboration.
