Wonderland English Medium School

Wonderland English Medium School Wonderland Primary school is based in Tsolo one of the most impoverished areas of Eastern Cape.

Tsolo Wonderland community was formed in the hearts of the community of Tsolo and was then founded in 1992. It was formed as a private community school of lower grades and is now an institution that has a capacity of more than 300 learners from Grade R to Grade 9 with 14 educators and 3 non-teaching staff.

90% of our learners come from rural areas with different economic backgrounds, that result

in difficulty to pay high rate of school fees but the standard of education they enjoy at the school is rated one of the best in the whole of Qumbu District. Learners in our school can be admitted in any institution of learning from grade 10 and have enjoyed good results in matric level. It is the first educational institution in the district for ‘socio-environmental education’ at all levels. We see the priority aim of humanity at present as confronting socio-economic and environmental problems, summed up as the conjunction of endemic poverty and environmental degradation. Its recent activities include projects on dialogue between distant communities (with most of the schools in the Qumbu district), education through creative, cooperative and productive work, recuperation of absorbent soil and the establishment of a community creative society. All the schools activities have a double aim: the training and capacity building of new generations and lending of services to improve living conditions. Its problems are cited as the impact of consumerism and global imperialism. The curriculum integrates cognitive, working, solidarity and recreational activities. The school describes some of its special features as an integrated approach to teaching of the Creative Arts, Drama, Dance, Storytelling and poetry are all key aspects of school life. There is also a Drama and Dance Society which has won numerous accolades in the past four years, by winning Provincial competition for 3 successful years. English has been adopted as the language of teaching and learning. It links language between people of different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. English based school allows learners to be able to communicate with a wider spectrum of people, thereby empowering them to appreciate and differentiate modern and cultural developments. We have since included IsiXhosa after finding the problem of learners who can speak their home language but cannot write it We pride ourselves in excellence in producing good maths, science and English top achievers. We also have a number of students who obtained admission in professional colleges, and universities. The community applauds our academic achievements and the trophies and certificates obtained from various department offices are an evidence of the school excellence. Our schools Drama has been invited to perform for various government institutions such as Social Development, water affairs, Mhlontlo municipality, Department of Education, and Department of Arts and Culture. We also have programs like Soul Buddyz that inform and educate children about social ills.
