This is a very interesting read and although we don’t have the same scale of wildfires in South Africa we have most of the same issues. One of which is not undertaking enough prescribed fuel reduction and ecological burns.

What are your thoughts on this?

Should we be spending more money on suppression or should we be focusing a bit more on prevention, which includes reducing the risks?

Those firefighters out there - how many of you are prepared to light up to remove the risks?

Do those that light up feel that they have the right support in the event something goes wrong, even though the events are meticulously planned?

Does our system of applying for burn permits assist or hinder the process of prescribed burns?

Do we know what we are doing when it comes to prescribed ecological burns?

Do we rather prefer being those gals and guys that are really only interested in suppression - red lights, sirens, high speed initial attack, helicopters and bombers, setting up teams to manage the developing disaster, tv and radio interviews, public parades after we eventually get control of the beast (or in most cases hold it long enough for nature to extinguish it)?

Fire away!!!

This is a story about frustration, about watching the West burn when you fully understand why it’s burning — and understand why it did not need to be this bad.
