SOME SCHOOLS IN VHEMBE TO REMAIN CLOSED AMID ONGOING DISRUPTIVE WEATHER
Following sustained heavy rainfall over the weekend, the Limpopo Department of Education has taken a precautionary decision to keep a number of schools in the Vhembe region closed. Several schools within the Vhembe East and West Education Districts remain inaccessible and will therefore be shut as we continue to monitor the disruptive weather conditions.
On Friday, a directive was issued suspending all extra classes, in response to forecasts warning of disruptive rain and the risk of flash flooding. District offices are now liaising directly with the affected circuits and schools to ensure parents and guardians are informed of the latest developments.
Learners at some of the affected schools rely on scholar transport, which is currently unable to operate due to the persistent rainfall. Parents are urged to remain vigilant and to notify school principals immediately if their routes to school become inaccessible.
To address the disruption to learning, the department has established a task team tasked with developing a comprehensive catch-up strategy. The plan is expected to include the organisation of educational camps for learners who have fallen behind in their studies, alongside the introduction of online learning programmes for all impacted schools.
The department will assess the situation and give updates on regular basis.

*LIMPOPO EDUCATION DEPARTMENT ISSUE WARNING OVER ADVERSE WEATHER FORECAST*
The Limpopo Department of Education is urging parents and guardians across the province, particularly those in the Vhembe District, to remain on high alert following a disruptive rainfall warning issued by the South African Weather Services for the upcoming weekend.
In a proactive move to prioritise learner safety, the MEC for Education, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, has directed all principals in the Vhembe East and West Education Districts to suspend weekend extra classes with immediate effect. This precautionary directive aims to mitigate potential risks for both learners and educators who cross low-lying bridges and susceptible routes to and from school. Educators are advised to use virtual and electronic platforms available to offer lessons.
The Department is closely monitoring the evolving weather patterns and maintaining continuous communication with the Weather Services to ensure the safeguarding of all learners. A further announcement regarding the resumption of classes in affected areas around Vhembe will be made on Sunday afternoon following a comprehensive risk assessment and further consultations.
This decision comes as the region braces for what meteorologists have described as a significant weather event, with the potential to cause localised flooding and disrupt travel. The safety of school communities remains the Department's foremost priority, and this pre-emptive action is intended to prevent any dangerous situations before they arise.
